Short Afro Fade

The best thing about the faded flat top for curly hair is it’s commitment to precision angles while showcasing the traditional gradual fade. It’s one of those haircuts that’s grafted into every culture and hair type for men. Barber Brandon Moore of Texas finds it a period piece and a modern statement.

Moore states, “I enjoy recommending this short afro haircut for black men who aren’t afraid of spending time changing their look from day-to-day. Day one it’s precise and clean. After shampooing and conditioning the hair, a natural oil-based product can be applied. Using a foam sponge in a circular motion on the hair can create manicured curls that shine and texture this exact haircut.”

High and Tight for a Black Guy

Notice how the mens hair blends into the skin perfectly with a smooth transition and a uniformed blend? Florida-based stylist Elgin Loyd created this haircut and he says it would suit any man.

Loyd explains, “It just depends on how much hair you want to leave on the top and how high or low you want your fade on the sides. It’s easy for a guy to keep a product in, groom it and also bring out your facial features or it could hide them. This fade is best on round heads. Skin fade haircuts are one of the hardest fades to do because you have to get a transition from the skin to the hair without leaving a hard line at the bottom.”

Tapered Waves with Beard and Sharp Hairline

These tapered waves are bold with a professional edge.

Created by barber Nicole Conaway of Virginia, the best thing about this cut for black guys is that it’s a perfect blend of edge and professionalism. This wavelength taper requires low-maintenance.

Conaway confirms that this is a perfect cut for African-American men who desire a longer wavelength on the top. The continual flow of the beard at a low length still provides a clean look.

“In order for the curly hairstyles for black hair to lay smoothly, you must receive a wash after pre-cutting. Finishing the hair with a light oil will provide you with a glossy finish without the product build-up,” Conaway notes.

The Waves Design

Described as “The Waves,” this style was made by barber Dean Delon L. Perez from Calgary, AB. It’s a skin fade with waves or a crisscross pattern.

Perez warns that men who want to try this cut must either fully commit to this look or don’t do it at all. “You cannot be indecisive. You’re in it to win it,” Perez emphasizes.

High Top Fade with Disconnected Part

Consider a high top fade, like this one designed by Canada-based barber Ali Sam. “My favorite thing about this haircut is the sideline or side part,” says Sam.

To create the high fade with disconnected part, Sam explains, “I like using the Wahk Senior. For guards, I used 0.5 on both sides, 1.0 and 1.5 to blend the sides and a zero on the back. On top, I freehanded using an afro comb and scissors. I used the “T Liners” for the shape up or line up.”

Most men with a round or oval face shape can wear this look well. The ideal hair type would be coarse and medium.

Short Wave Cut with Taper Fade

A bald taper fade with waves over curly textured hair is a masterpiece. It was created by Deshawn Jackson, a barber from Houston, TX.

“My favorite thing about this style is that the simplicity of the cut really allows the natural wave pattern to stand out. Because it’s a very simple haircut, it can be done very quickly,” Jackson explains.

Jackson recommends that the barber or the stylist trying to recreate this look use a detachable blade clipper with a 1 1/2 blade, their favorite adjustable blade clipper, electric shaver/finisher, trimmer, razor blade, and shears.

Braided Man Bun with Mid-Bald Fade

The braided man bun with a mid-skin fade can be worn in a business or casual setting. It was cut by barber True of Arizona.

This look is also a low-maintenance hairstyle, so no additional products are needed.

True adds, “This look is recommended for the confident, modern-day man who’s looking for a style that’s clean but flexible. Although this style looks best with round and/or oval-shaped faces, any face shape can work.”

Curly Afro on Top to Temp Fade with Beard

This particular look is a high bald taper or a temp fade with a faded beard line up and a curly afro texture on top. Created by barber Joey Blackwood of California, this a pretty common haircut on a black man, except for the faded out beard. Blackwood expounds, “Fading out the beard is a fairly new trend that has been become more popular in the last couple years. It gives the man a little more detailed and clean look to their beard.”

Blackwood states, “Also, take note if you have gray hairs, so you can use a semi-permanent dye or an enhancement to get rid of the gray. A technique I use is applying these men’s hair products, not just to the gray, but around the hairline to create a more sharp and full look.”

For any man who wants to adopt such an afro fade, it would be best for one with a light scalp and black-colored hair.

Clean Buzz Cut with Line Up and High Skin Fade

A short buzz cut with a line up and bald fade is a very classy look for the professional and businessman.

Barber Jake Boyle of  Summit, PA describes this look as “a skin fade blended into a 1.5 on the top.”

There’s no cut cleaner than a high skin fade. It doesn’t require too many products. According to Boyle, “I usually just use a lining spritz for the shape-up. Hair clippers and a razor will do the rest.”

“You can have long hair on the top and skin fade it, or you could have a buzz cut. It works either way! I would recommend this cut for someone with a clean scalp and no dry spots/rashes on their heads for the best results. These things would be much more exposed to this cut,” explains Boyle.

Bald Cut with a Long Beard

A bald cut with a faded beard is low-maintenance. Barber Donald Emery Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA created this cut.

“The overall style can be maintained at home, although you should seek professional advice for shave techniques and growth patterns. For the beard, a pick and an all-natural balm should be used to promote growth and add moisture to the skin underneath,” Emery Jr. says.

This stylish look is great for the distinguished black gentleman or a man that’s naturally thinning in the crown area and wants to at least grow out a long beard.

Uniform Layered Cut Waves

You’ll look excellent with these waves and sharp connecting lines from the forehead to the beard.

This is a uniform layered cut by Chris Thorn, a talented barber from Pennsylvania. It’s one of the most common haircuts for men today. Thorn explains, “It’s ideal for most face shapes and hair textures. This look is also versatile as it can work in a business or casual setting. My favorite thing about this look has to be that it’s very low-maintenance.”

Thorn also points out, “This particular short haircut works best for men simply because of its versatility and durability.”

Natural Spinner Waves

A haircut with 360 waves offers an urban, sporty, athletic, classy, and natural look! Connecticut-based barber Jose Crespo says, “The thing I love the most about this look would be how the natural waves come together so uniformly.”

To achieve hairstyles for men like this, you need a lot of time, a little bit of grease, and a 100% boar bristle brush. Crespo continues, “Apply a small amount of grease to your hair and proceed to brush in the direction that goes with your hair’s growth pattern. You’ll need to do this repeatedly, over and over again until you reach the desired amount of waves. Note that natural waves will not come in one day. Getting waves is a process and requires a few days of brushing.”

Burst Fade Mohawk with Hair Design

The unique designs on the side, combined with the yellow tips on these twists, make this burst fade and mohawk haircut one of the baddest and boldest looks right now.

Pennsylvania-based barber Wendell Kinley highlights that doing a hair design on the side of the head can sometimes be tricky because you don’t have a lot of room to work with.

Kinley adds, “The one thing I really enjoy doing with this mohawk fade is the geometric designs that are simple and bold. If you go too small and intricate it will only last a few days at most, but if you go bolder you will have a lot of contrast between the skin and the design it will stay a lot longer.”

Low Fade With Hard Part

This haircut is a low fade with a part, designed by Guarionex Diax of Florida. “My favorite part about this haircut is the part with the fade, which makes the haircut pop out even more. The edge also brings out the haircut,” Diax points out.

The product Diax uses for this haircut is called Spritz. Diax explains, “It freezes the hair in place and makes the edge more precise. I also use oil sheen which leaves the hair shiny and silky smooth.”

One of the best features of such black men haircuts is that it works for anyone!
