A curly bob is a type of bob haircut for women with naturally curly hair or who add curls to their straight hair. You can make most types of bobs work with curly hair. The key is to give it the right shape for natural curls. The types of bobs include inverted, angled, A-line, stacked, graduated and more.
Curly bob hairstyles are feminine, playful and easy to style. For ages, the standard thought was that curly hair looked better longer because of its natural tendency to grow wide first and then down. However, this thought can be tossed out with that tube television. So go on and try out some of these rockin’ curly bob cuts!
Short Stacked Bob
Q&A with style creator, Patricia Gonion
Master Hairstylist @ Salon Raché in Pruneyard, Campbell, CA
How would you describe this look?
This curly stacked bob is timeless and ultra-feminine. I love the complexity of the haircut. Because her hair has a fine texture, her curls are springy, which create the lightness of curls around her face and interior of her hair.
Cutting her hair damp to dry, I am able to pick up each curl randomly to create the light texture within each curl pattern.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This stacked curly bob haircut works best with fine hair, medium curl pattern, and a high neckline. I mention a high neckline because you can see the design line from every angle movement.
The lifestyle of this curly bob is easy. No blow-drying is needed, and curls can be encouraged by twisting curls at the wet stage with argan oil. Hydration is key to keeping hair shiny and curls controllable. Combining weekly moisture masks and argan oil will maintain the style.
Angled Curly Bob
Q&A with style creator, Ellen Ky
Art Director & Hair Cutting Specialist @ Essensuals London in Plano, TX
How would you describe this look?
This is a curly angled bob cut that I’ve done with a razor. A curly hair bob (with the right texture) can be beautifully enhanced with a razor haircut, which allows for weight removal to help curls bounce!
I love that even if it’s short, there is still a lot of styling versatility.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This bob haircut is great for wearing curly or straight. This is a prime example of how to style and fix a curly bob. When wearing this bob curly style, using a light curl cream and a curl spray with light hold keeps the curls soft but defined.
This is great for people who don’t necessarily need to be able to tie their hair back, although you can push the hair out of your face with cute side braids or twists.
Must-Try Naturally Curly Bob
This curled bob is absolutely gorgeous and smart at the same time! Remove the bulk off the back and keep the length in the front with some side bangs if desired, for an easy and fresh look. Is there a better framing combination than a short curly bob with side bangs?

Short Curly Bob with Bangs
The key to keeping your natural curls beautiful and moisturized for a short curly bob is proper home care and salon maintenance, so talk to your stylist and inquire what products are best for your type of hair. Cutting them short in the meantime would be helpful if you want to repair your damaged strands.

A short curly bob hairstyle like this is still very popular and flattering. Curls are the loveliest answer to when you’re looking to make your bob look thicker and more dimensional without changing your natural texture and color. Naturally Curly Long Bob
This bob with curls is a waterfall curly cut because each curl falls below the other to showcase each curl. This bob is layered to bring life and movement to the tight ringlets underneath and on top. Everything moves freely, complements her facial structure, and gives her that perfect curly shape every girl strives to achieve.
For this curly bob, you want to consider using a quality product. Try DevaCurl’s Decadence line, SuperCream, and Ultra defining gel to give her curls moisture and definition. Give time and attention to your tight curls while applying conditioner. The more you work it in the more definition and less frizz you will receive. You also want to make sure you have time to let it air dry because it takes a little while for it to dry.
Splendid Curly Angled Bob
Q&A with style creator, Cheryl Quinn
Owner @ Qusion Salon in Burlington, ON
How would you describe this look?
This is a curly angled bob with graduated layers that are only from behind the ears, from the nape to the crown to give height and remove bulk.
Roots are Schwarzkopf 9-7 with 20 volume and ends are Paul Mitchell’s “ink works” hot pink diluted with a conditioner that acts as a rinse and gives the rose gold color.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Styling products used are DevaCurl volumizing foam with DevaCurl set free spray, mixed together and applied all over and dried with a diffuser until 80% dry.
The client is also a hairstylist, so she likes the fun yet polished look. She has more of a round face shape, so leaving the sides with some length was a great option because we didn’t want to create width or bulk at the cheekbones.
Cute Perm Bob for Women Over 60
Stylist Mousey Browne gives this grandma a wonderful short curly asymmetrical bob cut to add life and shape. She finished by perming her hair which gives it more body and an easy out-the-door style!
Chin-Length Curly Bob Hairstyle
This look is a curly short bob that’s razor cut into a round shape. By using some Arrojo brand curl products, we were able to leave her hair totally natural. No blow dryer, no brushes, and this bob looks great with no effort.
Realize you will need to get comfortable using products to enhance the bob cut. It works best on curly coils but can be adapted for any hair texture – even straight.
The beauty of it is that it works with the contours of the individual’s bone structure. Almost anyone can wear this curled bob as long as they are comfortable showing off their face, as this cut opens up the face and emphasizes the cheekbones and eye area a lot!
Weave and Curls
Q&A with style creator, LaNell Jones
Master Cosmetologist @ Halle’ Hair Studio LLC. in Stockbridge, GA
How would you describe this look?
This look is a crochet curly layered bob with a water wave curl pattern. I love this protective bob because it’s fun, flirty, & versatile.
This is a bob that will allow you to work out and still have fabulous hair! The cut on this bob looks great when pulled up into a high ponytail.
Any advice for someone considering it?
A client that is considering this curly bob can’t go wrong. This look is complementing to those with thinning or balding. This bob can be as big as you would like it or more natural.
There are a variety of different curl patterns available. This protective style, if installed correctly, has the potential to promote hair growth.
Curly Bob for Round Faces
Q&A with style creator, Hannah Villavicencio
Hairstylist @ theFactory Hair in San Diego, CA
How would you describe this look?
This is a trendy and easy to style curly bob that is perfect for people with some natural texture. I love that the bob gives a 1920’s feel by the length sitting at the cheekbone.
Any advice for someone considering it?
If you find the right products for your hair texture, it can easily be a wash and wear style. Generally, I would suggest something lightweight, moisturizing, and soft with some hold so the finish is natural and not crunchy.
This haircut is very versatile and can suit many face shapes by adjusting where the length and weight sits.
Curly Medium-Length Bob
Q&A with style creator, Jonathan Fulton
Creative Director @ David & David Hair Salon in Plymouth, UK
How would you describe this look?
I have been experimenting with the curly hair method for some time now, as I am very passionate about curly and all things natural or the way nature intended!
I cut this graduated curly bob in a ‘deva haircut’ method which is totally dry cutting and shaping curl by curl without the use of a comb or brush whatsoever. The shape needed to be structured externally but textured and layered internally to create something which will encourage the hair to naturally do what it wants to do and maximize the curls.
We use Bouclème for our curly clients, which is free of sulfates, silicones, parabens, or alcohol. We believe that curly hair should be treated differently in every way than straight hair, so different techniques and products are used.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Be proud of the hair you have and always go with it! Bigger is better! The graduated medium-length curly bob I believe is a bit like a pair of jeans. Classically fashionable. Always looks great and suits almost anyone!
Choppy Bob
Q&A with style creator, Kari Sakuda
Hairstylist @ Jacque Rojas Salon in Honolulu, HI
How would you describe this look?
This look is the classic posh spice bob on curly hair. I love the effortlessness and versatility of it.
We’ve cut the style into her hair so she’s always ready to go: to work, a night out, mimosa’s poolside, or on her next vacation.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Consider if your face shape is right for this curly bob cut, and if it’s not, perhaps it’s just the length that is not suited for the face shape. For example, consider doing a longer bob if your face is rounder.
Someone with naturally straight hair who likes this bob but doesn’t necessarily want to curl their hair to look like that every day should talk to their stylist about perming options.
Lob Haircut
Q&A with style creator, Sherrie Virtue
Hairstylist / Deva Advanced Curl Specialist @ Au Premier in Montreal, QC
How would you describe this look?
This is a curly long bob (lob). It’s a bit shorter in the back and slightly a bit longer in the front, with some layers for added volume and movement. This is her natural hair color.
I love everything about this bob because it looks effortless. We used two products to style her hair. First I applied Aveda Be Curly curl enhancer and then a small amount of Aveda Confixor gel. Then we diffused it on medium heat and speed.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This haircut and length is a classic and could be symmetrical. This bob cut allows you to have some volume without your hair getting too big. This bob haircut looks great on all face shapes and is not too much maintenance. A long bob is actually great for curly hair because of all the movement created.
Cut this bob every 4 to six months to maintain shape and overall health of the hair. I would recommend minimal product usage – a shampoo, a conditioner, and 1-2 styling products. Also, girls with curls need a lot more conditioner.
This bob is great and fits well with most lifestyle.
Specialized Spiraled Deva Cut
Q&A with style creator, Sarah Frazier
Goldwell Color Stylist / Deva Curl Inspired Stylist @ John Edwards Salon and Day Spa in Bellevue, NE
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a specialized bob haircut for curly hair by Deva Curl haircare called a Deva Cut. I love the Deva Cut because it personalizes the haircut to the client’s needs based on their curl pattern.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I am a Deva-Inspired Stylist and I use Deva Curl products. I used their styling cream, spray gel, and hairspray to achieve this bob.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This curly bob would be great for anyone with medium to tight curl patterns. I highly recommend finding a Deva Stylist if you have curly coils!
Layered Curly Bob
Q&A with style creator, Anyea Garrido
Hairstylist / DevaCurl Stylist @ Salon Belor in Cape Cod, MA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
The volume with this layered curly bob is my favorite!
When curls are cut dry and in their natural state, you are able to personalize the shape to each client. I like to keep the perimeter pretty square and strong, but when I add the layers, I use little to no tension to prevent cutting too much. Curly hair is all about the shape!
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
To maintain and recreate this bob, I suggest sulfate-free, paraben-free and silicone-free products to ensure the curls will stay properly hydrated and healthy. I only use Deva Curl products. When curls are wet (soaking wet not damp), apply a cream. If you have thicker hair, I suggest sectioning to create an even application. I find that raking the cream through curls is best. After the cream application, I scrunch a gel into the hair followed by a microfiber towel to scrunch the excess water out.
For this curly bob, I used Deva Curl Supercream and Deva Curl Arc Angel Gel. Then air dry or diffuse, but don’t touch those beautiful curls until they are 100% dry! Once dry, have fun with your hair. Flip your head over, shake it out, or scrunch your way to big, beautiful curls!
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
The great thing about this layered curly bob is that the cut is personalized to each face shape and curl pattern. You can’t go wrong! If you don’t like volume, I suggest not shaking your hair out at the end, and when applying the products, apply in a downward raking motion to elongate your curls.
Candy Colored Jaw-Length Bob
Q&A with style creator, Claire Criswell
Hairstylist @ Crowning Glory Hair Studio in Burbank, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I call this curly bob “candy flossing” (used Purpleriot). This bob can be worn a multitude of ways and always look great. That’s the perfect thing about this bob, it’s fun no matter what you pair it with.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I used Kevin Murphy products to style this bob. Before blow drying, use Young.Again serum. This is a great heat protection product and leaves hair with a nice shine. Using Body.Builder mousse enhances the volume of the hair.
The curls were created using Hot Tools 1-inch curling iron (a great trick of the trade is to take different size sections of hair you are curling). The hair is set with Session.Spray and finished off with a couple sprays of Shimmer Me Blonde for a healthy looking shine.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
Any client could have this bob. The soft pastels make this bob a very versatile style that anyone could rock. It’s chic and ultra femme. As with any hair trend, confidence is the key!
Natural Curly Bob with Waterfall Layers
Q&A with style creator, Hailey Elizabeth Nagel Smith
Hairapist / Blonde Specialist / Deva Curl Level 2 Certified @ Royal Volume Salon in Downtown, Charleston, SC
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
To me this is a low-maintenance, waterfall layered curly bob with multi-dimensional highlights in a graduated manner. I love the freedom it gives/represents. This chick had been relaxing her hair kinky curly hair for years and was inspired by curly girls on Instagram, so she began the outgrowth of the permanent chemical and a year later was ready to get rid of the damaged ends. She was also back to a healthy enough curl state that we could introduce highlights. She now has the freedom to look and truly be natural with very minimal upkeep.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
First, it is very necessary to condition in the shower with a paddle/wet brush. It is way easier to get through if the hair is really well saturated by a deep conditioning mask and water. You want to make sure to follow your personal hair direction and part-= line while stroking the curls, gently beginning at the ends of the hair and working your way up. Once fully detangled and feels of the consistency of “seaweed”, rinse lightly.
At this time, apply your choice of curl enhancing/taming product. I prefer cream products like Wired by Rusk and workable gel products like Curl Gloss by Oribe. It depends on the hair and curl type. Dry with a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt in order to avoid snagging the hair and causing the curl formation to disconnect. At this point, some girl need to apply clips at the root to help give lift and some do not. Also, depending on your schedule and personal preferences, I recommend air drying, defusing or drying using a hooded dryer.
Wear as many days as you can stand to go without washing! I go about two weeks on average. This does not mean any rinsing with water, just don’t shampoo so as to let your natural oils enhance your curls’ health.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This curly bob haircut is perfect for those who have damaged curl ends and need a new start to their curl life, or anyone who wants to have an awesome curly bob. The roundness of the face should be taken into consideration when shaping is taking place. For example, the symmetry of the chin and crown, as well as jawline structure, should be considered.
The cut works well for any lifestyle upkeep-wise and is generally low maintenance. It may need to be touched up every eight to nine weeks or so, but that depends on how many outgrowths you like to allow. Some people need a re-shaping within four weeks because their back line has gotten out of shape. I offer free neck trims so you can go longer in between cuts if you so desire.
Enhanced Blonde Bob for Curly Hair
Q&A with style creator, Holly Johnson
Stylist / Colorist @ Style House Salon in Nashville, TN
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
We enhanced these existing curls by making them voluminous and more defined. My favorite thing about this blonde bob for curly hair is the height I was able to get out of her hair while still looking soft and manageable.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend Shu Uemura Kaze Wave on clean, towel dried hair, then spray Shu Uemura Depsea Foundation throughout. Blow dry with 25mm round brush. After drying, spray on Shu Uemura Texture Wave section by section before curling it with 3/4 Marcel iron from Hot Tools. Once the curls cool, finish off by lifting and expanding the hair with your fingertips (from the scalp, up and out) and Shu Uemura Cotton Uzu.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
Clients with existing curls love when their curls look soft and effortless. Products definitely played a huge role in creating this curly bob with blonde balayage highlights, but even a single curl cream with a diffuser blown upside down could do the trick! By simply using a smaller iron to curl (after completely dry), it really defines your curls while still keeping the overall style looking soft. This short blonde bob hairstyle has the ability to look great for a couple of days!
Lightened Up Graduated Bob and Curls
Q&A with style creator, Carole Rickiby
Stylist and Salon Owner @ Tusk Hairdressing in London, UK
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This look is a slightly graduated bob on curly hair with a few long layers. Our client had some grey hair but didn’t want to color her hair all over because it would be too much upkeep.
We lightened up some pieces, mainly coming from the underneath, so as not to show when growing out. Then we used the Goldwell Colors. These are anti-allergy colors and can be topped up without damaging the hair.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
Try Moroccan Oil combined with a little bit of mousse to hold the curl.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This bob is great on naturally curly hair. It’s a wash-and-go style, so no maintenance!
Voluminous Kinky Bob
Q&A with style creator, Taylor Capaldo
Hairstylist and Makeup Artist @ Lavish Salon in Providence, RI
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
My favorite thing about this bob is that it is screaming volume and character! This haircut really shows off the fullness and body of her hair. It has a beautiful rounded bob shape to it, along with a trendy bang and some fun layers. This bobd shows off the beautiful dimension in her hair color and brings out the definition of each and every curl!
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I always recommend all DevaCurl products when styling my clients. For this bob, I first cleansed and conditioned her hair with No-Poo Decadence and One Condition Decadence. I chose to layer two products on top of each other, leaving the hair saturated with product. The first layer of product that I used was the Supercream Coconut Curl Styler to define, moisturize and smooth out her curls. The second product I used was the B’Leave-In Miracle Curl Plumper to control and create volume to the hair. She then sat under a dryer until she was completely dry. After she finished drying, I shook her hair out and fluffed it out as big as we could get it!
You can maintain this bob and help your “second-day hair” stay just as big and fun by using The Curl Maker Curl Boosting Spray Gel or Mist-er Right Dream Curl Refresher. All of the DevaCurl products are activated with water, so it is easy to just wake up, spray your hair with a spray bottle of water, and then use these products to continue rocking your healthy curls for the week!
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I would recommend this haircut for any curly client with this curl pattern and hair type. Anyone who wants to have full hair with a lot of body and movement, along with a fun bang, will love this hairstyle!
All of the stylists at Lavish Salon LLC, in Providence, RI are curly cut specialists who love to cater to their clients. It can be overwhelming when first starting your curly hair journey, which is why we all find it very important here at Lavish Salon to teach our clients all they need to know about how to properly take care of their curls and rock their curls every day with confidence!
Wavy Bob with Layers
Q&A with style creator, Lynne DaSilva
Deva Certified Curl Specialist / Deva Curl Educator @ Acappella Salon in Temecula, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this look as a one-length curly layered bob. This style is very versatile.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend DevaCurl products to maintain and recreate this bob. Specifically, wash with DevaCurl No Poo Cleanser and condition with DevaCurl One Conditioner. Apply a layer of DevaCurl Frizz Free Foam and a layer of Deva Curl Light Defining Gel. Finish by scrunching.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
It works well for wavy hair and/or curly hair that is thick, thin, fine or coarse. It’s is also suitable for all face shapes by adjusting the length. It’s a great bob for the gal on the go or client’s trying to grow short haircuts for curly hair.
A-Line Bob with Short Bangs
Q&A with style creator, Bella Maxine Weinstein
Senior Stylist @ Seven Hills Studio in Richmond, VA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a take on a layered, A-line bob with a short fringe. I love the way we continued her fringe through the sides of her hairline which opens up her face and creates nice lines in a soft look.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
She has finer hair, so we used Bumble and bumble All Style at her roots to keep away oil and maintain volume. We used Bumble and bumble’s Curl Mousse through the mids to ends help enhance curl and hold the shape. We finished with the Bumble and Bumble Dryspun to add more body and a little grit.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This brown curly bob haircut is perfect for all hair types who want something easy and flattering. The exaggerated fringe and face framing pieces are especially good for finer hair types because it creates the structure that finer hair lacks.
Shoulder-Length Bob
Q&A with style creator, Luvena Leslie
Owner / Licensed Cosmetologist / Hairstylist @ Luvena Leslie Curly Hair Salon in North Haven, CT
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this as a shoulder-length curly bob haircut with lots of layers. I painted light brown highlights on to accent her curls.
My favorite thing about this haircut is the amount of layers she has. The bob cut and layers keeps her hair from having a boxy or triangular shape. Many of my clients abhor the “triangle”. Also, the highlights are light enough to make a statement, yet natural enough that they don’t scream for attention.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
To achieve this bob, I used DevaCurl products. I washed and conditioned with Devacurl No-Poo and One Condition. I then used Devacurl Styling Cream and Arcangel Gel. Because I don’t recommend washing every day, the next morning she can use Devacurl’s Mr. Right to spritz and scrunch to reactivate the curls.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
One of the best things about this curly bob is that pretty much anyone can wear it. Because the layers frame the face, it can flatter most face shapes. One huge benefit of this haircut is also the ability to put the bob up in a ponytail. Worse case scenario, a few curls won’t stay in the front area, but you can put in a few bobby pins or a headband to hold it back.
Lastly, with so many women desiring to wear their hair in its natural state, this bob still looks professional and most likely wouldn’t draw attention from employers. My client is a professional singer and she can confidently wear her hair in this style without feeling as though her hair is taking attention away from her voice.
Sophisticated Bob for Over 40
Q&A with style creator, Eladia Lebron
Colorist and Stylist @ Devachan Salon in Manhattan, NY
How would you describe this bob and what is your favorite thing about it?
This curly bob is glamorous and sophisticated. The curls have the perfect definition and shape because they’ve been properly hydrated and individually defined.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
To create this bob, it’s important to choose the right products according to your curl texture. This bob was created With Devacurl Original Styling Cream for moisture and maximum curl definition. After the curls were dry, I separated them for a fuller, shiny, voluminous look using Devacurl Beautiful Mess. I rubbed the product between my hands and applied it, twisting each individual curl following its coil pattern. We finished with Flexible Hairspray for hold with soft movement.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This bob hairstyle is for all curly gals who embrace their natural texture and are not afraid to show it off. It’s edgy and sophisticated.
Asymmetrical Curly Bob Cut
Q&A with style creator, Candace Witherspoon
Deva Certified Curl Specialist @ Hair By Candace Witherspoon in New York, NY
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I’ll describe this bob as fun! My favorite thing is the slightly asymmetrical shape because it adds a bit more character. This hair is fun, cool, modern and it moves.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend a great moisturizing conditioner to help detangle and smooth down the curls. I also recommend an alcohol-free gel to help with frizz. The Devacurl Decadence Noo Poo and One Conditioner and the Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel are my two favorite products for this bob.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I recommend this bob for a client with a rounder face shape because an asymmetrical cut elongates the face shape. Adding shorter pieces in the front that frames the face will give you a softer look. I always recommend layers which help the curls move and not look so bulky.
This hot bob is great for someone with a simple lifestyle. It’s a wash, moisturize and air dry/diffuse type of style. It’s such a great bob for super curly hair!
70s-Inspired Shaggy Bob
Q&A with style creator, Sara Burke
Senior Stylist @ Black2Blond Salon Spa in Vancouver, BC, Canada
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this look as a modern take on the 70s curly shaggy bob. My favorite thing about this bob is how the curls work to create softness and movement within a square shape.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
For me, styling curly coils starts with the correct shampoo and conditioner. I used “La Biosthetique Curl Shampoo” to begin creating volume, then “La Biosthetique Anti Frizz Conditioner” to give some moisture to the hair but not weigh it down.
I then applied “La Biosthetique Fixature Mousse”. I love this mousse because it combines hold with a moisture binding agent, which is perfect for curls! I like to layer the product as I diffuse and once it’s fully dry, I blast the hair with a cold shot and apply a little more mousse to tame frizzy hair.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This bob is perfect for most curly/wavy textures as it is so customizable. It’s best for medium to thicker textures as the layering offers a nice alternative to the typical heaviness thick curls can have. It’s a beautiful wash and wear bob that is great for the low maintenance guest!
Softer Waves
Q&A with style creator, Chrissy Wells
Hairstylist @ Imago Hair Salon in Richmond, VA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a softer bob for the tight wavy texture. I love the amount of layers she has. With this length, it is easy for the shape to fall flat in a few months and turn into a triangle shape. But with these layers, she will be able to grow her length out longer without feeling too heavy at the bottom.
A short face frame in the front also helped achieve this shape. We were able to create shorter layers around her face to help with the longevity of the haircut. We also used “chunking” shears to take out weight but not add texture.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
We used Devacurl’s Decadence line (No Poo and One Condition), along with AG’s Recoil as her styling product. This is a creamy gel that supplies moisture and hold. She has very thick and dense hair so the recoil was not too heavy or too strong of a hold for her texture.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I recommend this bob for clients who have a very dense and thick wavy texture that do not like to maintain their haircut but every five months or so. If the client has this wavy dense texture, I would advise them not to allow the stylist to use “texturizing/thinning” shears, as this would just create more frizz for them.
You can adjust the shortness of the face frame to accommodate any face shape and lifestyle of the client, just ask the stylist.
Textured Ear-Length Bob
Q&A with style creator, Jade Atia
Artistic Director @ Olive Eco Hair in Tarragindi, QLD
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe the look as a classic bob with natural texture. My favorite thing about this is the shape. I love how this bob style accentuates her neckline and elongates her neck but still gives fullness and body with her natural curl.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I would recommend Kevin Murphy styling products because they are lightweight and consist of beautiful essential oils. I used Motion.Lotion to enhance the curl and give the definition, followed by Hair.Resort spray to give a little texture and hold.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I would recommend this bob to anyone with a petite, heart-shaped face as it gives them more fullness and body. This bob haircut would suit anyone that wants an easy, wash and wear style.
Messy Curly Bob for Thick Hair
Q&A with style creator, Kimberly Seibel
Hairstylist @ Hedkandi Salon in Calgary, AB, Canada
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this messy curly bob as carefree with lots of airiness and movement, but still with a good strong shape. I love working with textured hair, so any opportunity I have to bring that out I encourage my client to embrace it.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
My client actually has very fine hair (but lots of it), so I wanted to make sure I used a product that wouldn’t weigh her messy curls down. A product that would encourage her curls and give them lots of body, all the while fighting frizz and keeping everything from poofing out. I used Bumble and bumble Prep Spray for gentle conditioning, and Bumble and bumble Curl Conditioning Mousse from roots to ends for a voluminous hold.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I’m a strong believer that there is a bob for everyone. The shape, length, and style should be tailored to each individual client based on their face shape, density and texture of hair. It’s also important to gain an understanding of who your client is and what their lifestyle is like.
In this particular case, my client wanted a big change. She wanted something new and sassy that would bring out her curls more that wasn’t going to be a huge styling commitment. After a thorough consultation, we agreed upon a length and style that would best suit her like this messy bob.
Classic Short Bob with Curls
Q&A with style creator, Sarah Jane Taylor
Hairstylist @ Big Joy Barber & Salon in Vancouver, BC
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a classic curly bob. It’s a contemporary take on a textured, low maintenance and easygoing style.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend a mixture of Davines This Is A Curly Building Serum along with Davines This Is A Curl Moisturizing Mousse. Combine them with their Love Curl Series Shampoo and Conditioner and you’ve got a light, non-greasy, non-crusty solution for natural, soft waves with limited frizz.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I recommend this bob with curly hair for someone who is willing to embrace their naturally curly texture and wants a short, fun bob with plenty of volume that opens up their face and highlights their rad, beautiful waves.
Youthful Bob for Older Women
Q&A with style creator, Jodi Kalman
Hairstylist @ North End Salon in Boulder, CO
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This short bob cut for older women screams stylish, youthful and sexy. She came in to see me with long (in a ponytail), one -length hair past her shoulders. After my consultation with her, I could tell that she’s a stylish, very young at heart woman and her look did not reflect her inner perception of herself. I wanted to keep length around her face as I love the long curls and the sexiness that it reflects.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend a curl building cream as this will keep the curl together (no frizz) and maintain a soft curl as opposed to a crisp curl. I used the Davines product line to achieve this bob.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
Anyone can wear this bob, however, I would not recommend it for someone with an extremely round face. I’ve achieved this bob on medium to fine hair types (the model’s texture is medium/coarse), but would recommend that a client has the density to hold the style together.
I love the versatility of this bob in that she can pull the sides back to achieve an altogether different presence.
A-Line Bob for Thick Curly Hair
Q&A with style creator, Jessica Earle
Hairstylist / Colorist / Booth Renter @ Vero Salon in Oakland, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a layered A-line bob. It’s a classic! I utilized my Deva cutting skills to shape her hair dry, curl by curl.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I recommend a leave-in conditioner (like Bleav’n, the Ultra Gel or Set it Free) to protect against frizz.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I recommend this bob for clients who want a classic look, have texture in their hair, or anyone who wants to control bulky or thick curly hair.
Upkeep is easy as long as you get a fresh shaping every 8-12 weeks. This is a great bob for someone who doesn’t want to spend too much time styling!
Flattering A-Line Spirals
Q&A with style creator, Kristy Wilson
Owner, Curl Specialist @ Uptown Curl in Minneapolis, MN
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a curly A-line bob. I love this shape for all curly hair because it creates volume and lift at the crown while leaving length around the face, where most girls are afraid of their hair getting cut too short). It’s also nice for active women who want to be able to tie their hair out of their face, but also have a short length. This is a fun, yet sleek shape that is easy to style.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
You need equal parts hydration and hold to create this definition. I cleansed and conditioned with DevaCurl Original No Poo and One Condition. On dripping wet hair, I raked through a layer of DevaCurl B’Leave In curl plumping serum, followed by a layer of ArcAngel Gel and scrunched until it stopped dripping. You can clip at the root and air dry, or diffuse. I diffused with a Dyson Supersonic dryer for more volume.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This bob is great for every curl type, especially for girls who have straighter curls on the bottom and tighter curls on the top. It’s also great for women who have an active lifestyle that wants to lose the maintenance of a longer haircut. This style and shape is very adjustable to flatter many different face types.
Soft Wavy Curly Bob
Q&A with style creator, Jessica Lambert
Hairstylist @ Luxe Salon in Denver, CO
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this cut as a natural, soft, wavy bob. The shape has been over-texturized with layering on her heavy side to remove weight, allow volume, and add a pleasing aesthetic shape. The bob is under layered on her left side in order to tuck cleanly behind the ear without pieces falling out.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
For these loose waves, I used R+Co Atlantis shampoo/conditioner for moisture and frizz control. Living in Denver, our naturally curly girls require a ton of moisture to style well. On lightly towel dried hair, I added Saryna Key 60/40 Mixed Shea Butter for more moisture, then finished her product application with a small amount of R+Co Motorcycle gel for extra hold. Her curls were then air dried, finished and tossled with a diffuser.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
Personally, I would recommend this bob to any client wanting to have the ease of wearing their natural curl texture and still have a fashionable bob cut. It does require a bit of styling at home, but this bob looks effortless because of the client’s natural curl texture.
We did not curl her hair in any way. This curly bob is 100% natural texture, just accentuated by the haircut. As a stylist, that makes my job the easiest. I love sending a client home knowing she has the best cut for her natural hair texture and she will look beautiful just the way she is!
Curly Asymmetrical Bob
Q&A with style creator, Mehr Hussain
Hairstylist and Makeup Artist @ Mehr Hair & Makeup in Sunnyvale, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This curly bob is a short, slightly asymmetrical layered bob that is perfect for summer. It was cut on dry hair based on her gorgeous natural curl pattern. My favorite part of the haircut is how it is customized to her individual curl pattern and helps bring out and define her natural curls.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I used the DevaCurl Decadence No-Poo cleanser, DevaCurl One Condition and the Ultra Defining Gel to create the bob. I love DevaCurl products because they have no sulfates, silicones or parabens, and they help hydrate and nourish the natural curls and waves! The Decadence line has coconut oil and is perfect for super curly hair.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I feel curly bobs like this are very versatile. It looks super cute and helps enhance the neckline! The bob complements people with rounder face shapes by adding length in the front. It grows out nicely and the front is long enough to be pulled back when needed.
