A layered bob is a bob haircut that’s cut in layers of different lengths. Adding layers to a bob creates texture, movement, and the appearance of more volume. This is the perfect bob haircut for women with thin hair and will lessen the density for thick hair. Layering a bob will work for all hair textures and face shapes.
Here are inspiring pictures of some of this year’s most popular layered bob haircuts.
Short Choppy Layered Bob
This short choppy cut is the look of the season with its hand-painted, choppy layers and sexy overall length. It’s one of the most popular layered bob hairstyles right now!
Short Layered Bob
Consider a short layered bob haircut. If you have a dark brown base, try adding chocolate highlights for dimension.
A jaw-length bob haircut with a lot of layers and movement is a very-easy-to-wear cut that can be styled with heat or simply allowed to dry naturally with some added product. This bob cut with layers will add volume and movement to your hair and can be very low maintenance.
Perfectly Layered Medium Bob
I’d like to call this a layered long bob (lob). The best thing about longer layered bobs is the versatility of their style. It’s just long enough to put it in a ponytail and just short enough to hit the top of the shoulders in the back to have that drastic angle.
Curling this style is also much easier than most bob styles because there is enough length in the back to wrap around a wand or curling iron without getting to close to your neck with the hot tool.
This medium-layered bob hairstyle is pretty universal. It works with most face shapes and can be tailored to all lifestyles. It can be dressed up with curls and a simple updo or dressed down with beachy waves or a half-up pony.
Trendy Wavy Layered Bob
Q&A with style creator, Ashley Barton Hairstylist @ Hair Klaudt in Charlotte, NC
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this look as effortlessly tousled! My favorite thing about layered bob haircuts such as this is that it’s a versatile style. It’s simple yet elegant, and would look perfect with any outfit for any type of outing!
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
The products that I recommend (also the products I used) would be a heat protectant spray and a medium flexible hold hairspray. In this case I used Rejuvenol Extreme Blowout Spray and Davines brand hairspray.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I honestly feel like this style would look great on anyone and could be tailored to each person’s needs! The length of the cut, as well as the short layers, could be changed to suit each face shape. The short wavy hairstyle was created using alternating curls with a 1-inch wand and brushing my fingers through the curls after. Super fast and super easy! Fine, medium, coarse hair it works for all hair types!
Short A-Line Layered Bob
Consider getting a layered A-line bob with a precision cut. An A-line bob adds another dimension to it and the graduation, yet another.
For women with fine hair, incorporate a volumizer such as mousse and a round brush for volume. If you have thick or coarse hair, use a smoothing cream and a flat iron if needed.
The great thing about this bob is its universal appeal to women of all hair types and face shapes. The face shape will determine the length of the bob.
Copper Blonde Long Bob with Long Layers
Q&A with style creator, Lindsey Willis
Redken Certified Colorist / Master Specialist / Hair Cutter @ After FX Spa and Salon in Broken Arrow, OK
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this layered lob as…amazing! It’s a copper red with some well-placed highlights all over the top. Her cut is a lob with long layers, a long fringe and lots of texture.
My favorite thing about this style, other than the client who wears it, is the softness it has.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
Redken and Pureology! For the color, I used Redken Cover Fusion in 7NCR and Flash Lift. She has curly hair, so to straighten it I used Redken Align 12 or Pureology Smooth Perfection in wet hair. After blow drying, spray each section with Redken Iron Shape 11 before flat ironing with the Sam Villa Sleekr. Finish off with Redken Triple Take 32 for hold and humidity control. To maintain this look, you need to see your stylist every five weeks for a retouch and a trim.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This style would look great on just about everyone. This particular client has very thick, curly, 75% grey hair. She’s very active and needs a ponytail for the weekends. P.S. she’s a grandmother of two!
Bob with Layers and Long Fringe
This modern bob with layers and long fringe cut is effortless, tousled, and undone…aka bedroom hair. It’s airy with texture and volume. It’s fun and sexy. The length is modern and fresh with soft undercut layers to enhance movement.
Use Moroccan Oil Hydration Cream before the blow-dry. After curling in opposite directions for beachy texture, tousle and shake it out while spraying Kevin Murphy’s Bedroom.Hair dry texture hairspray.
The great thing about this cut/style is that it works for most hair types. Because of the length and fringe swoop, it can pretty much work with all face shapes. It’s also low maintenance, lasting a few days with dry shampoo and texture spray. This look is very fresh and versatile for everyday women.
Red Chin Length Bob with Layers
Q&A with style creator, Ashley Flores Hairstylist / Salon Owner @ Gold on Grand Salon in Los Angeles, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I absolutely love this chin length bob style with layers because it’s low maintenance, but can look effortlessly chic in a matter of minutes. On the day to day, this is a wash and wear client with long work hours and early call times. This hairstyle is so versatile that she can easily throw in a few waves to be ready for a night out with the girls or a glamorous work event.
The cut we have created for her has a very structured undercut bob so it easily falls into place with lots of texture on top to compliment her funky and sophisticated lifestyle.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I love sending my clients home with the Davines Texture Spray. It has a soft touchable hold, but can bring out all the fun a cut like this has to offer.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
My favorite part about a bob cut like this is that with slight alterations, it can be suitable for a wide variety of clients. The angle of the cut can be very flattering to all face shapes, it just depends on the angles used.
With this client, we chose something less drastic to complement her diamond-shaped face. The structure we created within the cut lends well to her fine, straight hair by creating body to give texture and volume.
Long Layered Bob with Side Bangs
Q&A with style creator, Janet Elammar Hairstylist @ Evolve Hair Studio in Toronto, ON
How would you describe this look?
This look is a stylish conservative long bob with layers. It provides a new look without being too trendy. Texturized ends give a soft feathered look, while layers add movement and volume. The side bangs give an updated look to the classic bob cut.
The style is smoothed using a round brush and finished off by directing the ends towards the face. The base color is a warm chocolate brown with caramel highlights to create dimension.
The best thing about this long layered bob is it looks carefree but also professional at the same time.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Consider the amount of time and effort it takes to have this style. To keep the cut looking fresh, it is recommended to visit the salon every 6-8 weeks. The base color will also have to be touched up every 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast the hair grows.
The bob haircut works best on someone who has straight or wavy texture and medium density. Also, who has an oval face shape or is looking to make their face appear longer and slimmer on the sides.
To recreate this bob haircut with layers, you need to take the time to style the hair because a blow dryer and flat iron are required. A wand could also be used to create loose waves.
When using hot tools, always use a heat protectant. Finally, this look is great for a person who is looking to achieve a professional image, while keeping up to date with their look.
Awesome Angled Bob With Layers
Q&A with style creator, Leah George Owner of Salon Metta in North Andover, MA
How would you describe this look?
This look is all the rage right now. The cut is considered to be a classic A-line bob. Nobody wants the “mom bob”, so I have to put a modern twist on it.
My guest is a trendy mom in her 30’s, so I made sure that we added an edgy vibe to it by giving it texture to the ends. She can recreate this sleek look at home in no time with a quick blow dry and a little flat ironing and still get her little one out the door without a hassle.
Any advice for someone considering it?
If someone came to me wanting this bob style, I would have to be honest about the maintenance. Although the cut and style are easier to maintain, the color will require a little more of your time in the salon.
Because it has slight layering, it creates a beautiful beachy look. Notice the length in front? This is a way to create a slimming look to someone’s face.
The benefits of this style go on and on proving that it is made for almost anyone. Lastly, make sure you protect your hair from the sun or heat damage with a color like this. I’m really loving MELU hair shield by Davines right now. The entire MELU group within Davines is great for protecting your hair against heat damage. Now go ahead, give it a try!
Lovely Layered Bob for Thick Hair
The best cool girl bob you’ll see around is this heavily textured bob with wispy bangs. An ideal chopped cut for thick hair that is lightweight yet still full of volume.
Beautifully Brunette Feathered Layered Bob
Emphasize your wonderfully brunette bob with feathered layers that creates the illusion of texture and volume. Which is a perfect hairstyle for women over 60 who have naturally thinning hair. Adding side bangs to layered bobs can accentuate your face beautifully.

Graduated Layered Bob
A bob with graduated layers like this builds up the body for such a shorter cut. Layers form a texture and secure a gorgeous windswept look.
Long Stacked Layered Bob Haircut
Q&A with style creator, Tyler Gray
Owner / Stylist @ Belle La Vie Hair Salon in Batesville, AR
How would you describe this look?
This bob with layering is fun and professional. The client wanted something edgy and that she could keep her job as a paramedic. Her hair was long before and it ended up in a ponytail most of the time. So we cut it off!
We pre-lightened the top and applied a vivid purple stain, finished with layers, stacked/tapered back, with asymmetrical sides, then styled with some beach waves.
I love everything about this bob haircut with layers – the purple, asymmetrical sides, stacked and tapered back, and still being business-friendly.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Face shape and hair texture play a role though. If you have frizzy, thick, and curly hair, you would have to spend a lot of time smoothing the hair.
As far as face shape, do a quick find on what face shape you have and the hairstyles to go best or worst. But just use your imagination and have an idea on how short is too short for you. Also, your skin tone comes into play with vivid colors but makeup can also help complement your hair.
Styling is fairly easy. There’s not much to work with, so less is more. I use a curling iron but leave the ends straight. I prefer natural hair oils instead of products but anything that makes the hair feeling like it hasn’t been washed in a couple of days works best.
You can have edgy hair in the professional workplace without being trashy. Classy, not trashy!
Very Short Layered Bob
Q&A with style creator, Rebecca Valane Barber / Stylist @ All Society Salon & Barbering in Murrieta, CA
How would you describe this look?
It’s a bangin’ A-line layered bob with bangs! I like my graduated bobs to be more on the dramatic side really keeping the emphasis on the shorter back!
Any advice for someone considering it?
The best part of this cut is how easy it is to style! Vent or paddle brush the back right then left-back and forth with the blow dryer, round brush the top section in back, then rough dry the front and either finish with round brush or flat iron depending on what you’re going for. It will just take 10 minutes tops!
Another thing I’ll say about short layered bob with bangs is it’s great on a heavier set woman! I hear women say all the time, “I’m too fat/heavy for short hair” Wrong! With the length in the front, it actually elongates your face while giving you sass in the back. It’s a very versatile cut and goes great on so many different face shapes and body types.
Stacked Layered Bob
Classic trendy and flirty, this bob is simplistic yet sophisticated. The haircut is classic with texture and movement added into the detail work.
Ask your stylist to create the texture and movement using a signature technique of cutting invisible layers with texturizing shears at a 135-degree angle into the hair.
The styling is so simple with this cut. Just put some primer, thickening lotion (for tension on the brush), and serum. Blow-dry the hair with a 2 inch round brush for a sleek volume look and finished it off with a little serum and hairspray.
This look would be perfect on any hair texture and can work with any face shape, although if you are working with a round or square face, make sure the front of the look is at least 1 inch below the jawline.
Airy Slanted Layered Bob
An airy slanted layered bob gets its softness from the feathered layers. Curl with an iron and lightly comb thru with your fingers to achieve an airy look. A bob style really shows its dimension and fullness on thick hair. It will work on fine hair but you will not get as much bounce.
Asymmetrical Layered Bob for Fine Hair
Q&A with style creator, Sarah Akana
Senior Stylist @ Princeton Salon and Spa – Mall of Georgia in Buford, GA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This asymmetrical bob is fun, flirty and can be styled so many ways.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
Use Aveda’s Phomollient through the hair for hold and volume and a styling creme to smooth flyaways.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This bob is great for clients with fine hair and round to oval faces. This style is perfect for the on-the-go woman who needs a blow and go style, but can be elevated with round brushing and curls.
Medium Bob Graduated Layers
Q&A with style creator, Emily Morales
Hair Artist & Make Up Artist @ 4-8-0 Hair Salon in San Antonio, TX
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a textured graduated bob. My favorite feature of this stylish medium bob is the harmony between the fringe and the stacked layers.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
The products recommended to recreate this bob might vary as this guest has a wavy texture that required Brazilian Blow Out Smoothing Serum during her round brushing. I finished her style using Kenra Professional Platinum Hot Spray for protection and hold as I flat ironed using my BaByliss Nano Titanium 1-Inch Flat iron.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
So many hair types favor a graduated bob because it looks great smoothed, straight or curly. I especially love this look wavy with a beachy vibe. I truly don’t get hung up on face shapes with bobs because the texture gives great structure that can balance concerns. That being said, discuss concerns with your stylist beforehand so the cut can be tailored with them in mind.
This bob is ideal for active clients that enjoy a style with versatility. Clients with the bulk of their hair at the nape can relieve weight with textured graduation to round brush under with ease or diffuse dry for curls.
Chic Short Layered Bob
This short bob is classic. Ask your stylist to cut into the ends to give it more movement and create less bulk.
Classic bob hairstyles like this work for a lot of women. The length can be adjusted depending on your face shape, and also some face-framing is optional.
Short Bob with Layers for Thin Hair
Opt for a short bob with heavy texturizing. It’s a great bob for thin hair. Achieve the look by cutting a classic graduated bob, and while you blow dry, texturize with the deep point cutting technique. My favorite thing about it is the incredible amount of movement. It is very light and never gets flat.
I recommend using a volumizer (Root Amplifier by Prive or Root Shoot by Wella) on the roots and smoothing cream for the rest (Relaxing Gel by Prive or Flowing Form by Wella).
Chin-length layered hair like this is ideal for a woman that likes a little edge added to a classic shape. You can adjust the graduation and the angle to fit different face shapes. Less is more with the styling, so it’s perfect for someone with an active lifestyle.
Collarbone Length Layered Bob with Highlights
Q&A with style creator, Tracy Pateras Style Director @ Decadence Salon in London, U.K.
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
Long bob haircuts are very popular at the moment. This cut has a strong outline, but broken into so it has texture and movement. What I love about this cut is the free range of style you can do with it and how easy to maintain as well.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I use Living Proof products which are great for all hair types and styles in terms of keeping the health and integrity of the hair protected and ongoing treatment. Use a small round brush to smooth out the hair, accompanied with Nourish styling cream. Or you can leave it natural if you have a curl or wave already finished with a serum or Amp, which is a textured cream.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This layered bob cut is perfect for someone who doesn’t want a lot of maintenance, but still wants to be creative and express themselves without having to compromise a professional position at work. Ideally, the best type of face shape would be a round or oval shape. The textured waves give more width and dimension to a heart or square face shape.
Subtle Brown Round Layered Bob Cut
Q&A with style creator, Valeriana Salon Assistant @ The Grand Salon in Brea, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a classic bob with subtle layering. I love how easy it is to style and how you can wear it in various ways. You can wear it as pictured in a classic polished way, or add a texturizer to make it more funky and fun.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
For this look, I used Small Talk and Headrush by Bed Head. Small Talk adds body, defines, controls flyaways, and protects the hair from heat. Headrush is a very lightweight shine spray. I would also use a Denman brush to flat wrap any cowlicks and a round brush to bevel the ends. You can try adding a texturizer called Joy Ride by Bed Head to add texture and extra movement.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This look is ideal for people with medium textured hair and will look flattering on oval shaped faces and square shaped faces. I would recommend this hairstyle for someone who has time to style it daily and has the ability to maintain the haircut.
Auburn Jaw Length Bob
Q&A with style creator, Yolanda Taylor Hair Designer @ Yolanda’s Color Studio in Palm Springs, CA
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This jaw length bob is simple yet stylish. My favorite thing about it is the layers. They add texture as they follow the angle to the front.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
Less is more with this style. Add a little root lift, add a few drops of shine gloss on ends to make blow drying easier, and finish with a pomade to bring out and define texture. The hair should be bouncy!
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This style is suitable for different types of hair and face shapes. It is perfect for those who prefer not spend too much time on their hair. Sassy and classy!
Shorter Layers Stacked Bob
Q&A with style creator, Dani Gonzalez Business Owner / Color Specialist / Stylist / Therapist / Hair Artist @ Dani’s Hair Artistry in Colorado Springs, CO
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This look is a short stacked bob. It is stacked under the occipital bone in the back and angled forward toward the chin with layers throughout.
My favorite thing about this look is you always have a style whether wearing it straight or curled. Either is easy and fast to achieve.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
The products I recommend are J Beverly Hills 5 n 1 for smoothing, anti-frizz, heat protection and shine, as well as J Beverly Hills Bodifier for giving weightless thickness to the hair and a little grit to hold a curl. Run J Beverly Hills shine drops through the curls at the end to finish.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This look is good for people that want something easy and that always looks like it has a style. Face shapes that work well with this look are long or square and the best hair type would be medium to fine to help add volume and fullness.
Shoulder Length Bob for Older Women
Q&A with style creator, Melissa Cincimino Color Specialist @ Tangles Hair Studio in Viera, FL
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this shoulder-length layered bob as a perfectly messy, chunky, versatile, and with just the right amount of sexiness.
Aside from the dimensional colors to help give it depth, the different shades of blonde and brown give the illusion of having even more layers than were actually cut into the hair.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I used a volumizing blow dry lotion to create volume and movement while still maintaining a smooth finish. I used a medium-sized ceramic round brush while blow drying the hair, lifting up from the roots. I also made sure to release the hair from the brush by twisting the hair in different directions and letting it cool. As a finishing product, I used a texturizing powder sprinkled on the root area, then fingered it through to create volume, hold, texture and grip.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
I recommend this look for so many types of people. I think it goes well with so many face shapes, hair types and lifestyles. It is so versatile and can be adjusted to meet your client’s needs and wants.
You can go messy and sexy or smooth and classic. It can be styled for whatever mood your client is in for that moment, hour, day, month or occasion!
Neck Length Caramel Bob
Q&A with style creator, Shannon Tajchman Stylist @ Shannon’s Hair Say in Kansas, MO
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a layered and textured bob with babylights and a balayage color technique in caramel and with a dark base.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
First, use a heat protectant on the hair. Then use a 1 1/4-inch curling iron, holding it vertically and wrapping at the top and down toward the ends, leaving them out. Be sure to curl in opposite directions and spray for the final look. I also recommend using a sulfate-free shampoo for color treated hair to maintain the color.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
Square face shapes are best for this length of bob because it gives the illusion of a more oval face. If you have a round face, you would want it longer. If you have a heart shaped face, you would want it around chin-length and maybe add a side-swept bang.
This layered bob cut is perfect for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of time getting ready, but also doesn’t want to just throw their hair up in ponytail every day. Almost any texture (except super curly) can rock this look.
Blunt Cut Bob
Ladies will never get tired of the classic chop and color. A dark-rooted blonde balayage makes this blunt cut bob more enticing. Flaunt a textured look with subtle layers such as this, and never be bothered having a neck-length cut.
Short Textured Bob With Fringe
This haircut is a short, choppy, layered bob with tons of texturizing and an added fringe!
It can be customized to fit any hair texture. This cut will add density to fine hair and make it appear thicker.
Weight can be removed from thick hair to tame it down while still having added volume. Curly hair can be easily styled into this look with the correct product cocktail and your hands!
Edgy Shaggy Layered Hair
Opt for a tousled, messy curl. It is a great look for women with an existing curl, but really anyone could manage this with the right product. My favorite thing about this layered bob is that you can move it and it doesn’t get messed up.
I recommend Kevin Murphy Bedroom.Spray, Kenra Texturizing Taffy, and Joico Turn and Flip hairspray. This look is for anyone that needs or loves texture! It’s a shaggy bob you can’t go wrong!
Long Layered Bob with Balayage
Q&A with style creator, Mia Morris
Hairstylist/Barber @ Brian Graham Salon in Minneapolis, MN
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?
This is a blended brown balayage on an angled bob with layers. I love this cut and style because it has an effortless feel but still has structure and style.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
I use Bumble and bumble Color Minded shampoo and conditioner because it’s cleansing yet gentle. I used Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray for hold, and when dry I use Bumble and bumble Dryspun for texture. The curl was achieved with a 1 1/4-inch curling iron.
What type of client would you recommend this look for?
The beauty of a bob like this is that you can tailor it to be a perfect fit for anyone. You can change the length, layers, weight and color scheme to work well with a client and what suits them personally.
Textured and Layered Inverted Bob
It’s a textured and layered inverted bob to bring out volume and movement to your thin locks! Neck-length bob on finer hair is meant to make it look so full of life. Blonde balayage on your dark locks is a masterpiece in this bob haircut.
Sleek Bob with Peach Hair Color
Try a sleek bob with peach hair color if you’re looking for a fresh layered style. This haircut will transform limp or fine hair making you feel confident and chic.
