Fullness for Women Over 60

Fullness for Women Over 60
Instagram @the_broom_room

The best haircut for women over 60 with thin hair is a jaw-length stacked bob. The stacking of the bob will boost the hair volume and the appearance of fullness.

Consider this blonde hair color shade and cut when you have straight, thin locks for a lovelier edge.

This cut is for someone who wants a fun, low maintenance hairstyle. The back is tapered short, making for minimal effort styling and the front is longer to frame the face. My favorite part about this versatile style is that is can be worn sleek or teased in the crown area depending on preference. The many layers create fun texture as well. This particular platinum blonde flatters this client’s low maintenance needs by camouflaging her white/grey hair.

Find a stylist who listens and knows what they are doing. If you have fine hair, the stylist may easily put too many layers in making for even finer appearance. If you have thick hair, the stylist will have to do a little more cutting and texturing to get that fun, piecey look.

This hairstyle flatters most face shapes, and looks great on sixty-year-old women with glasses. If you live a more on-the-go lifestyle, you can easily twist and pin back the sides. This hairstyle can also be worn on a client with a wavy hair texture as well.

Youthful Volume for Women Over 40

Youthful Volume for Women Over 40
Instagram @krazyforhair

You gotta admire this youthful volume for women over 40 if you’re one of them. It gives your dark locks added length and fullness. This wavy, mid-length chop will provide you an ideal haircut for women over 40.

Women who have fine hair want to find a hair extension specialist who specializes in fine hair. The reason I say that is because not all techniques used for extensions are great for fine hair. Make sure you’re going to somebody qualified.

There are a variety of products that I highly recommend for clients with fine hair as well. I love Bumble & Bumble, as they have an entire line formulated for fine hair.

Long Angled Bob or Lob

Long Angled Bob or Lob
Instagram @ashkell83

To me, this thin haircut and color combo says classic, lived in, and simple! The cut is a great length for someone dipping their toe into the short hair water and to make thin hair look thicker!

This long bob or lob is that it’s very versatile. There are so many different ways to style it. It can still be pulled back into a cute ponytail when you’re headed to the gym. Or, throw your hair back into an updo or half-up for a formal occasion. You can wear it sleek and straight with a headband for work or during the day and then it’s super easy to throw some beach waves in for a night time look.

The blunt line created in this cut is great for someone with thin or fine hair because it gives the appearance of more hair throughout the baseline. I also added some interior layering for movement. The style that I created looks best on a round or oval shaped face. When the hair hits just above the color bones it accentuates the features of these face shapes.

To style this cut at home I suggest a mousse for blowdrying that will give your body and hold – I’m a big fan of Mousse Bouffant by Kerestase. I also suggest a texture product and heat protectant for beach waves. I love Nectar Thermique by Kerastase and Texture Wave by Shu Uemura.

This hairstyle incorporates many different techniques to give the locks a fuller appearance. The long layers, highlights, shadow root, and curls all distract the eyes from the amount of hair. Instead, we see contrast and movement, which is generally associated with long hair.

These products are good to put in before blow-drying and using a curling iron to help thin hair hold in that amazing volume and curl without weighing it down. Don’t feel like curling it? Put some braids in after showering and take them out in the morning to get a beautiful natural wave.

Tousled Angled Bob

The greatest tousled angle bob for thin hair
Credit: Pinterest

The best hairstyle for thin hair is a tousled angled bob. The angle of the bob will help your thin strands instantly appear thicker when cut into tousled light layers and blunt ends.

Slightly Angled Bob

This look is classic, slightly angled bob. Haircuts for thin hair benefit from seamless light layers that can be added to give volume but still maintain the sleek and flawless style. My favorite thing about bob hairstyles like this one is the fact that it is so versatile and completely easy to style many different looks.

I recommend a working spray like REDKEN Fashion Work, a thermal protectant like Kenra Blow Dry Spray, and a texture spray like IGK Beach Club for a long-lasting, voluminous style.

I recommend this look for any hair from thin to coarse. It is a great look for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time in the morning to get ready. For someone who wears their hair long but is always putting it up, cut it off and live a little!

Mid-Length Stacked Bob

The coolest mid-length stacked bob for thin hair
Instagram @dejuliisbeauty

Q&A with style creator, Abbey DeJuliis
Hairstylist @ Salon Pasca Wilmington, DE

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a low maintenance summer color and stacked bob haircut. The face-framing balayage pieces brighten up the entire look and offer a golden sun-kissed glow. What makes balayage highlights more appealing than traditional foil highlights is that due to the rooty nature, it does not require frequent touch-ups. This also applies to the cut. The choppy layered look offers women more opportunities to work in their natural texture, which pairs beautifully with beachy hair. I love the flexibility, and individuality of this look, and since no one balayage is the same, it can be completely personalized for the client’s style and hair type!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The key to maintaining this look, particularly for finer hair, is a regiment of nourishing products that are not heavy in nature. I recently have been loving Davines, an Italian all-natural brand. It all starts with the shampoo and conditioner. I like to keep moisture in the hair without making it heavy. The best shampoo/conditioner combo I’ve found for this is Momo from Davines. This combination keeps the locks from getting too dry from the summer heat while still maintaining volume.

For styling, I managed frizz and obtained smoothness with a few drops of Oi Oil. Where most oil-based serums can weigh down thin hair, Oi Oil has a Roucou Oil base and offers frizz control and cuts dry time without leaving the hair limp. I pair this with Volu Root Lift Spray, also a Davines product. Volu Spray gives your hair the structure needed at the root to achieve bouncy, voluminous results.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look would be perfect for the client that wants a trendy style but doesn’t always have the time to get back to the salon every six weeks. Balayage provides clients with all of the trends, but very little upkeep. The look itself is meant to look like it’s growing with your natural hair. That being said, this is not the best method for blending gray.

The choppy layers take the weight off the ends of the hair, giving the root the ability to have some natural lift and providing a nice “wash and go” look. The length can be adjusted based on the client’s preference for ponytails. The entire look is completely customizable to each client. That is what makes this style perfect for clients with finer/thinner hair, on-the-go parents, or just college students looking for lower up-keep costs.

Short Hair with Pops of Pink

Q&A with style creator, Danielle Badger
Hair Designer @ This or Die Salon in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is pink pops of candy! My favorite thing about it is the dimension you get with the blonde and then BAM… surprise. Some fun color in between!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Unfortunately, when you have highlights of fantasy colors in your hair it is harder to maintain. Always ask your stylist to make the color more vibrant so it fades out slower and use color-safe shampoo! I always recommend shampoos from Surface Hair. They have color lock vita complex in all of their products and they are 100% vegan!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color is great for someone that doesn’t wash their hair a lot or doesn’t mind coming back to the salon monthly. It fades out, but the great part is that when you return you can have something completely different and start with a fresh palette.

Sexy Long Shag

A sexy long shag haircut for thin hair
Instagram @ramseytobey

The best haircut for long thin hair is a shag cut. Using the razor cut technique to add choppy layers will create fuller-looking hair.

This look is a modern take on the classic shag cut with layers tapering down toward the back. It was cut using a razor for extra texture. My favorite part of this haircut is the fringe. It’s long enough to not be considered “bangs”, but just brushes the top of the cheekbones for a sexy, lived-in feel.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used R+CO’s newest product Sail for this look. It’s a salt spray, but it has a lightweight oil in the formula that is perfect for thin hair that doesn’t need the grit of traditional salt sprays.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This haircut is very versatile and any face shape could wear it. Young professionals will really enjoy a haircut like this because it can be styled many different ways for the office, gym, or a night out. I highly recommend this haircut for women with thin to medium textured hair.

Rose Gold Colored Short Bob

A remarkable rose gold bob for thin hair
Instagram @kristi.coleman

Q&A with style creator, Kristi Coleman
Hairstylist/Colorist @ Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Mosaic in Fairfax, VA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This rose gold colored short bob look is trendy and sassy. It’s my favorite kind of bob! My favorite thing about it is that it’s so versatile. You can wear it straight for a more chic and polished look, or you can add some waves and texture spray for a more rock and roll, undone look.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

If you’re rocking the waves, I always recommend a texture powder or texture spray to add fullness to thin hair and to help create that messy-on-purpose look. I also love hair oils (argan or moroccan) if you’re doing a smooth, chic look. I always add little to the mids and ends for moisture and smoothness.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This shape is pretty universally flattering, but I especially love it on round and oval face shapes. You can always add a side bang or a little bit of face-framing layers to this look to customize it. I love this type of cut on thin hair because you can pop in some waves, spray some texture spray, shake it out, and look like you have twice as much hair!

Layered Long Bob with Deep Side Part

The easiest hairstyle for thin hair is a straight lob with a deep side part. Styling with a flat iron and adding holding spray will take less than 15 minutes. It’s gorgeous low-maintenance shoulder-length haircut.

Stylish Texture for Women Over 50

Q&A with style creator, Laura Anderson
Master Stylist and Co-Owner @ Vivid Hair Studio in Antigonish, NS

How would you describe this look?

This look would best be described as a natural textured pixie. I love the use of natural tones to bring out beautiful dimensions in the hair – creating the look of density within the hair cut.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Don’t be afraid of the product! The main product used for styling in this cut is a volume powder. This style can be effortlessly blown dry with a texture spray (think: sea salt spray or something light and gritty), and when dry something as light as a powder can be used for styling if used liberally. Believe it or not – most of my clients don’t use enough!

I love a pixie. I think a cut like this can suit any lifestyle based on its ease and complement any face shape. Thick or fine hair can have a pixie cut – it just comes down to the cut and styling products used!

Lob for Straight Hair

A unique lob for thin straight hair
Instagram @hairxcraft

Q&A with style creator, Shelby Craft
Hairstylist @ Salon 6 in Indianapolis, IN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This medium-length lob for straight hair was created by doing babylights and then a shadow root from the scalp, feathered down about an inch to blur any lines. My favorite thing about this look is that when it starts to grow out, you won’t see a harsh line of demarcation like you would with traditional highlights. You won’t sacrifice being light, it’s subtle, and it is also a way to have natural looking dimension. This look is great for thin hair but can be very versatile with all textures.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate this look, use Eufora Aloetherapy shampoo and conditioner, Eufora Boost root lifting spray, and Sculpture glaze and Illuminate shine mist mixed together before blow drying. To finish with a flat iron, use Eufora Smooth N’ Thermal Defense Prep Spray to help tame frizz and flyaways while sealing the cuticle and adding shine.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is perfect for those who do not want to be in the salon every four to six weeks. With this look, you can go up to six to nine months without needing highlights. The shadow root helps to blur the line of demarcation so you can go longer without needing touch-ups.

Choppy Pixie Cut

The loveliest choppy pixie cut for thin hair
Instagram @rycnyc_hair

The most popular haircut for thin hair is a textured pixie. The short cut is easy to manage and all of the texture is super trendy right now.

Q&A with style creator, Russell Cordeiro
Master Stylist / Educator @ Art and Autonomy Salon in New York, NY

We love this short blonde hairstyle you created! How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this as a crop cut with disconnection. It’s the kind of look that has definitely been referred to as a pixie. I, of course, love short hairstyles. It’s sexy and sophisticated. I also enjoy cutting short hair. There is a level of personalization and detail that can be brought into cutting short hair that just doesn’t exist in longer cuts.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

On towel dried hair, start with a texturizing spray or cream. Blow dry the hair using your fingers, tousling back and forth until dry. This technique will add volume and “grit” to the hair. At this point, you can be finished, but for a more textured finish you can add a hair paste or clay product. I like recommending a matte or low shine finish for this look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I truly recommend this look for any client willing to go for it. People who have a creative side or someone who has an outgoing personality would be best suited for this look. It is also perfect for anyone who wants to expose their face and neckline. Keep in mind that this is very versatile. It can easily be converted from funky to conservative to suit any situation.

Airy Textured Bob

The most flattering haircut for thin hair is a neck-length textured bob. It has the right length to make your hair look thicker as well as all of the texture will hide naturally thin locks.

Q&A with style creator, Carolynn Judd
Owner/ Stylist @ Ave Salon in Ogden, Utah

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this short cut is how airy and light it is. I love that the color compliments the cut with the perfect dimension.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate short haircuts like this one, you will need to apply a wet volume product before rough drying the hair. My go-to is ANTI.GRAVITY cream by KEVIN.MURPHY. When the hair is completely dry, you will need a 1-inch iron (GDH is my favorite). Grab two-inch sections and curl vertically, starting closest to the head and wrapping around as you move away from the head. A how-to for this technique is on my IG page!

After the curls have cooled, I spray a light texture spray to piece out the curls. My favorite right now is BEDROOM.HAIR. The smell is amazing and it works like a dream.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is perfect for anyone with thin hair and little texture. It will really make you feel like you have twice the hair. With this look, you can go from work to play and not have to change a thing.

Lived-In Long Shag

Instagram @_thatjennagirl_

Q&A with style creator, Jenna Binette
Cutting Specialist @ House of J Henry in Portland, ME

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This shag haircut with micro fringe is one of my favorite looks for summer. The shag is great for any texture or thickness and is easy to style for those who only air dry. The bangs can complement this cut at any length depending on face shape. This is the perfect way to transition from last year’s grown out lob!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate this look at home, I recommend starting with Kerastase Bain Densite and Fondant Densite in the shower. For straight hair, you can achieve this wave by using a flat iron to form an “S” pattern in the hair. Finish this look off with Kerastase VIP Spray for even more volume and hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is perfect for anyone looking to have more lightness and adds movement to their fine hair. Not daring enough for a micro fringe? Any length would work, but I would recommend thinking about a longer fringe for a sexy 70s vibe.

Middle Part Blunt Bob

A marvelous middle part blunt bob for thin hair
Instagram @_hairwitch_

Q&A with style creator, Corrie Sweat
Hairstylist @ Salon Twenty-ten in Savannah, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as being edgy while maintaining a timeless feel. This client is a fashion student and enjoys a more dramatic look, complete with a sharp middle part and finished off with the blackest black of hair color.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This look can be styled so many ways. For this particular photo, there was very little styling required. I primed the hair using Redken One United before the blowout, flat ironed quickly and completed the look with Verb Ghost Oil to give a high sheen to complement the color and prevent flyaways. I also finished with KMS Hairplay hairspray for added hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The look is a no-brainer and can easily be modified to fit most clients’ needs. This look was tailored to her desire for something sleek and high drama, but this style could easily be worn more textured and tousled. For a client looking for a versatile look that doesn’t require heavy styling, a bob is always a good option. I would recommend this for clients of all ages, lifestyles and hair textures.

Asymmetrical Bob

A beautiful asymmetrical bob haircut for thin hair
Instagram @jasminejun

Q&A with style creator, Jasmine Howard
Hairstylist & Educator @ Melrose & Mcqueen Salon in Atlanta, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is an asymmetrical bob with added layers and texture to compliment the client pictured. My favorite thing about this look is that the shorter side draws attention to what I think is one of the sexiest parts of the face, the jawline.

My client has a strong jawline, but if she didn’t, we would slightly adjust the length and layers to make the jawline appear more strong. I love to employ the principles of design into my haircuts. My focus is always “where do I want the eye to be drawn to?”

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The product line I suggest is R+Co. It is a luxury haircare line that is sulfate, paraben, gluten, and cruelty-free. The products within the mentioned line that I used for this client were Chiffon which is a lightweight mousse that adds shine and light hold, in combination with Jackpot which is a stronger hold product that adds fullness and texture. I finished the look with a little Trophy which goes on dry and adds texture and shine.

This look is suitable for many hair types, but those are the specific products I would recommend to a thin-haired client with low-medium density. Suitable products are key to maintain any hairstyle.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I truly believe that there is a bob for everyone. Intentional asymmetry can be extremely flattering as it can make a client’s face appear more symmetrical through contrast. Especially when it comes to thin hair, the reduction of length is creating the illusion of more fullness in their fine hair.

Not to mention, different versions of this look have remained relevant since the cropped bobs of the 1920s. As long as you have the right products and home care routine, this look is constantly fashionable and fairly low maintenance.

Sunkissed Textured LOB

A unique sun-kissed textured lob hairstyle for thin hair
Instagram @rubyelectrahair

The best haircut for thin hair is a shoulder-length textured lob cut. The texturing on a long bob around the shoulders will boost volume, flatter any face shape and is easy to style.

Q&A with style creator, Ruby Fernandes
Hairstylist @ Brennen Demelo Studio in Toronto, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This client looks like she just went on a surfing vacation to Costa Rica for six months and the sun kissed her hair with natural highlights. I love the pieces around her face that accentuate her features.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Pureology just came out with an amazing system for this hair type hair called Clean Volume. Within the system, you will find shampoo, conditioner, weightless mousse and instant revitalizing mist. Use your shampoo and conditioner every other day. On towel-dried hair, apply the weightless mousse to your roots and the instant revitalizing mist to your ends. After applied, rough dry with a paddle brush for a textured beach look or blow dry with a round brush for a smooth polished look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is best for someone who is looking for a natural, lived-in look. This client typically gets her hair colored every four to six months.

Effortless Medium Shag with Bangs

effortless medium shag with bangs
Instagram @hollygirldoeshair

Opt for an effortless, Medium shag-esque cut. Even if you have hair that’s fine, the disconnected layering allows for plenty of movement and volume while still maintaining a bit of structure.

For someone who likes to air dry and go, something like R+Co’s Rockaway Salt Spray is my go-to for this soft, beachy texture. Otherwise, blow dry with a volumizer and then use my flat iron to give it some wave. Finish this style with Oribe’s Dry Texture Spray!

This look is great for someone who wants to give their hair some shape and life while still keeping some length to it. I think the fringe can really add some style and softness around the face, even for people who like to wear their hair up often.

Lovely Layered Bob

A lovely layered bob hairstyle for thin hair
Instagram @francine_aleese

Q&A with style creator, Francine Makshanoff
Senior Stylist @ JCPenney Salon in Moreno Valley, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a layered bob. My favorite thing about this haircut is that it adds volume to thin hair, making her thin hair appear thicker and fuller.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate this look at home, you will need a blowdryer, a medium-sized round brush, a flat iron, a volumizing mousse, and a light hairspray. I begin by applying a volumizing mousse throughout and then rough drying until hair is about 75% dry. I then blow dry using the round brush, working with two-inch sections starting at the back and pulling at a 90° to 180° angle to achieve volume. Flat iron as needed and finish with a light hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is not a low maintenance, get up and go hairstyle. While the actual styling process may not require a lot of time, it does require some product and the use of a round brush and flat iron. You will also need to keep up with trims every six to eight weeks to maintain the length and shape of this cut.

Classic Square Blunt Bob

A classic Square blunt bob haircut for thin hair
Instagram @dashu_lovehair

Q&A with style creator, Dashu
Hairdresser @ Salon Golova in Russian Federation, Novosibirsk

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a classic square with a slight elongation to the face and an asymmetric fringe. The main element here is, of course, the texture. It is everywhere except for the control line which is in a static position. The haircut looks smooth, but when there is movement or wind, the hair starts to dance.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For this look, I used Bed Head Rockaholic TIGI Thunder Struck Texturing Salt Spray for highlighting the texture and Matrix StyleLink Height Riser for volume.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The form of this is universal and it will suit anyone. With the help of a properly selected length and the initial or lack of fringes and slicing, you can correct the shape of the face and facial features (large forehead, prominent nose, cheeks, etc.).

This look is very convenient and practical. It does not require special styling, but it will always look organic in any image whether you are at a social event, on a dance floor, or at a rock concert.

Soft Layers with Wispy Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Lisa Kiorkis
Stylist/Owner @ Gemini of Chicago Hair Salon in Peoria, AZ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My client has hair that’s medium-fine and wanted a style with movement, but wanted to keep as much length as possible. This look is softly layered, creating barely there layers on the top crown portion of the head that are blended into the bottom so that we don’t take out too much weight. I love that she can have movement and texture without sacrificing density and length.

For her color, we gave her bright highlights with an iridescent golden tone and a creamy tan lowlight. The overall effect is a buttery, creamy and rich vanilla tone. This creates contrast and brightness (especially around her face) without washing her out. I also love the versatile bang that is cut short and textured to sweep to the side. It creates a styled look even on the days she wants to pull her hair into a ponytail.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To achieve this look, I would absolutely recommend using Olaplex during the service and maintaining with the take home mask. It will keep her hair strong and healthy, especially in the summer months. I also recommend a good heat protection spray like Redken Pillow Proof Primer Spray and Pureology Style + Care Volume Blow Dry Lotion. For added volume at the root, use Pureology Clean Volume Spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone that “wants layers but doesn’t really want it too layered”, and anyone with thin or medium density hair. It is also great for all the busy moms out there that love an easy maintenance look. The textured, side swept bang allows you to quickly pull the rest of the hair up without losing “style” to the look.

Clean Symmetrical Bob

A clean symmetrical Bob haircut with bangs for thin hair
Instagram @shannonhairaz

Q&A with style creator, Shannon Fisher
Senior stylist @ Modern Love Salon & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a crisp, clean bob. I am in love with the precision of this cut. My favorite part of this look is its ability to deliver itself in different ways. The simplicity delivers a sexy, sophisticated look, while it’s geometric and clean shape gives it a bold edge. Styling this in different ways (straight vs. wavy/curly) can transform it into something new every time.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using Kevin Murphy’s BODY.BUILDER volumizing mousse and SMOOTH.AGAIN anti-frizz treatment to style this cut. The BODY.BUILDER will deliver volume at the root and SMOOTH.AGAIN will assist in creating a smooth end.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This haircut requires about 10 to 20 minutes of styling time with the use of a professional hair styling product, a blow dryer, and a flat iron. This is great for anyone with thinner hair like this trying to create fuller, thicker hair.

Tousled Wavy Bob

A noticeable tousled wavy bob hairstyle for thin hair
Instagram @thehartofhair

Q&A with style creator, Autumn Palatsi
Master Stylist, Colorist & Educator @ Parlor in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a tousled bob with a heavier, halo-shaped fringe. Nothing about it is hard. The edges are all softened by point cutting, which gives it a lot of playful personality through texture and color. The color effect also gives the illusion of volume because it incorporates a slight shadow root, baby-light dimension, and sun-kissed blonde tips.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

As an Aveda Artist with an Aveda fan-based clientele, I choose AVEDA everything! I used all Aveda color to prep her hair and accentuate the cut I knew we were doing. The products we used to style with were Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to prep, Aveda Voumizing Tonic at her base to style her thicker hair, and Aveda Air Control Hairspray during and after hand styling and twisting some waves into her hair with the blow dryer.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This specific look works great for someone with a heart or oval shaped face. If your face is more round or square, I would recommend a different choice for the fringe area, perhaps a side swept fringe, a micro fringe, or no fringe at all instead of the rounded one I used here. Lauren’s hair is actually very thick, so we chose this look to use her thickness to an advantage. She looks great with so much texture because, without it, her hair can tend to lay very heavy and take over her face instead of enhancing it!

For someone with finer hair, I love to customize a look like this with some kind of fringe or layers that eliminate a strong parting in the top because it gives the appearance of more density. It’s also super easy to style and works great for someone who likes to use little heat, but is open to the product as a tool to make their cut and color shine bright!

Long Blunt Cut Balayage

A stand-out blunt cut for thin long hair with balayage color
Instagram @stefan_riccardi

Q&A with style creator, Stefan Riccardi
Freelance Hairartist @ Stefan Riccardi in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

Blunt, one length haircuts are increasing in popularity and seem to be defined as the new hair cutting trend. It certainly is a bold way of making a statement! Inspired by classic designs of haircutting, the shape of this haircut evokes confidence, sharpness and independence in a woman’s character. It shifts the burden of complexity away from the hair and onto the woman herself. Its appeal is eye catching and will be sure to keep heads turning back for a second glance of admiration.

As balayage highlighting continues to revolutionize today’s world of hair coloring, it is also interesting to see how classic forms of haircutting tie together with modern hair color trends. My favorite thing about this look is that it evokes elegance and youthfulness in a woman’s appearance. It often involves cutting a couple inches off the length of your hair as you will need to have your shortest layers from the previous cut reach the overall hair length. The result of this is immediate healthier fuller hair that feels silky soft and has mesmerizing movement.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Depending on hair texture, achieving this look will differentiate. For women with naturally straight hair, I wouldn’t recommend using anything more than a heat protector before flat ironing as adding more product will only increase oil build, leaving your hair heavy and limp. However, if you have wavy or curly hair and want to smooth out your hair for a sleek, pin straight look, you may want to add hair smoothers to facilitate smoothing out and taming frizz before blow drying hair.

Bear in mind that regardless if your hair is straight, wavy or curly, a blunt one length cut does not need to be styled straight to have its appeal. Hair can still be styled without changing its natural state and still looks very flattering. In regard to maintaining the color, I recommend a color-safe shampoo as it will increase the longevity of the color and prevent it from fading.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Determining the right length for your face shape is key to pulling off this sharp-edged style. It is worth noting that if you have an oblong shaped face, a one length blunt cut will make your face appear more narrow. However, incorporating a fringe will solve the problem as it will balance out the length of face shape and is actually quite complimentary to the design of the cut.

Furthermore, dense hair types may benefit from a bit of softening if only at the ends to break it up, but this is more a matter of personal taste. When deciding on color choices for this technique, choose tones that are opposite from your skin’s undertones. So, those with warm undertones might opt for a cooler color, and vice versa. The degree of importance varies from hair color to hair color, but it’s a good guideline to remember.

Sleek Shoulder Length Layers

Q&A with style creator, Alisha Miller
Hairstylist @ Ottalaus Salon in Lehi, UT

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is sleek, but still textured enough to have shape and style. This look is amazing because it is a versatile style where it’s modern looking, but still easy enough to style with or without a round brush, and long enough to pull back for busy moms!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used all Kevin Murphy products to create this look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Since this is a medium length haircut with no bangs, it can pretty much look good on all face shapes. However, I recommend oval, long, and diamond since more weight is toward the bottom, really balancing it out with the top of the head to get rid of elongating where you don’t need to.

This is such an easy look to style and anyone can wear it. Toss up to go to the gym or jump out of the shower to get to work. It is an overall perfect style for the busy everyday person!

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a soft, flowy and summery style to appear like she has thicker hair.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For styling, I used Kevin Murphy Body Mass to plump up the roots, Kevin Murphy Body Builder for extra volume and roundness, and Kevin Murphy Doo Over to add light texture and hold. I finished with Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine for a summer glow. It’s my favorite! For at home styling, I highly suggest Doo Over and Shimmer Shine.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look suits a longer oval face shape. It’s perfect for low maintenance, get up and go lifestyle.

Medium Length Shag + Fringe

When looking for haircuts for thin hair, consider a modern shag with bangs.

To maintain this look, you would probably need a fringe trim every three to four weeks. For products, I used Davines’ Dry Texture Spray, then ran the Oí Oil through her midshaft and ends. I didn’t use a hot tool (other than a blow dryer) and styled her as I was drying with my fingers (no brush needed).

I think the shag is really a great cut for any face shape. It’s both versatile and edgy! It works well with straight or curly hair, so your texture won’t be an issue. I think the bangs are great for someone that has a shorter forehead because helps in creating the illusion that you don’t!

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is very soft and versatile. It has soft, point cut layers with some disconnection so that the bottom length looks solid. The balayage is soft and warm without being brassy. This look is great because the upkeep is minimal.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I’m obsessed with Sebastian’s Whipped Cream and Dark Oil. Of course, I also using a professional shampoo. For thin hair, I love shampoos like Abba Color Care and Moisture. Wella’s Color Care shampoo for thin to normal is great as well. I use a medium-sized round brush to blow it smooth with a light wave at the ends.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone who wants something that looks effortless and is low maintenance. It’s great for most face shapes because you can always bring up the angles around the face. The brightness in the front is youthful and soft and it grows out beautifully.
