The wedge haircut is a voluminous retro-style short layered bob for women with fine & straight hair that became popular in the 1970’s. Olympic Dorothy Hamill really made this look popular. Although short wedge hairstyles are not for everyone, many women will find these haircuts refreshing.
You’ll find lots of gradual layers, stacking techniques, short A-line or asymmetrical shapes, choppy cuts, blunt or wispy bangs, tapered backs. All of these make up a usual wedge and can naturally enhance the density of your mane without needing too much weight!
This is a popular cut for women with fine and thin hair that needs a bulky twist or simply someone wanting to have a taste of the short hair lifestyle.
Wedges have a wide range of styles – you can go for soft and gentle layers for a feminine aura or a super short and spiky style for a funky vibe.
There is surely an approach for every face shape and hair type – even for wild curls! Revamp your look with these fabulous and very in-demand short wedge haircuts!

Wedge Hairstyle Great for Women Over 60
This is such a charming short wedge haircut for women over 60 that incorporates volume and elegance together. This short angled bob complements natural colors well with its low and easy upkeep.
Beautiful for Over 50
This is a cute stacked bob with lots of movement. It’s a great short hairstyle for women over 50 who want the ease of shorter hair without going to a pixie cut. She’s growing out her gray, so I did a heavy highlight and toned the blonde to better match her natural gray hair.
What’s nice about wedge hairstyles are that they are fairly easy to maintain. Use Aveda’s Pure Abundance Style Prep and Phomolient before drying her hair to create some volume and finished with Aveda Air Control hairspray. This cut looks great on many different hair types (straight or wavy or even with soft curls).
Great for Curly Hair
This look is a curly wedge. I apply thicker highlights than I would on straight hair because curls tend to naturally blend colors together. The bold color and angled haircut enhance the wave by drawing your eye to the individual tendrils. Going shorter in the back and longer in the front creates major volume and movement through the back and keeps “safe” length around her face. It also draws her profile up for a more flattering silhouette.
This short wedge haircut is for someone who wants to enhance their natural wave with a stylish haircut while keeping their regimen nice and easy. This look is nice for any curly or wavy hair because if hair is extremely thick it may get too voluminous. I would recommend this haircut for all face shapes. With a round face, keep the front length longer than the jawline to draw the eye more up and down, and for longer face shapes, the jawline would be a perfect length.
The best way to style this look is to use a lightweight curl product (I love sweetheart curls by L’Oréal) and diffuse with a blow dryer. To fix up individual curls that are acting up, wrap a few pieces around a 3/4 inch rod iron. This look should take at the absolute most 20 minutes, so it’s wonderful for anyone on the go. Maintenance is about every 6 weeks or so.
Cute with Blunt Bangs
I mixed the bowl and bob cut and added some volume by texturizing the back of her head. My color inspiration was possible starting with the Redken bleach and then glazing with the Shades EQ gloss 09v / 09t/09p / 09b / clear in equal parts.
After the gloss, I used a fusio dose protein treatment by Kerastase (concentrate vita cement/booster shine) and then dried with Uemura Shu – Straightforward blow dry oil spray and styled with Shu Uemura Uzu Cotton for texture, volume, and shape.
I created this wedge hairstyle for several hair types. More precisely for fine to medium hair thickness and for straight to wavy. For at-home maintenance, you will need a protein shampoo and conditioner and an Extreme Redken treatment to repair and strengthen damaged hair.
You can also alternate these products with a blue shampoo and conditioner (Redken blondage) to keep your color protected and bright. As for the in-salon maintenance you will need to come in after 3 weeks for another gloss to keep your color and another haircut in 4-5 weeks to keep your desired shape.
Very Short Wedge Cut
This is a razored stacked bob haircut. The best thing about this look is its versatility. You can wear it sleek or disheveled, and it still looks like you put the effort in. It is a very easy style for the right hair type.
This style is best suited for those with a longer face or narrower face, as it brings the eyes up to focus on your lovely facial features. You can style this cut any way you like, whether you leave it natural with a leave-in cream (I enjoy Matrix Boho AirDry Cream) or you can put some salt spray in and blow it dry with your fingers, or you could easily dry it smooth with a round brush and some blow dry cream (I used Matrix Skinny BlowDry Cream). Once you make the chop though, be prepared to want it short forever! It’s easy and so effortlessly chic.
The Classic Wedge Haircut
This wedge haircut or short stacked bob is a classic style with a modern spin. There’s a happy balance between precision lines and texture. Adding just the right amount of texture makes it more modern, and the precision stacking in the back makes it the time-honored classic stacked bob that never goes out of style. What I love the most about this cut is how it retains its shape and at the same time, the hair moves and bounces naturally. I also love the soft wispy lines frame that frame the face.
I would recommend wedge haircuts like this to anyone who likes a classic look with a little extra edge. This cut is easy to style and maintain on a daily basis but needs to be cut a reshaped every 4-6 weeks. As such, the person wearing this cut should be prepared to make regular haircut appointments. This look is great with highlights or natural grey hair as shown in the photograph.
Chic Disconnected Cut
This is almost a cross between a pixie and a textured bob. I approach most pixie haircuts in a similar way, cutting the sides and back before deciding where to go with the top section.
In this particular haircut, I took a horseshoe section and cut the back and sides pretty short, and left the remaining hair longer, cutting it into a bob shape. It’s a little edgy but still very soft. This is probably my favorite haircut to do. It allows for more creative liberties, even if you’re keeping the final look more conservative.
This look can be pretty universal. You can achieve similar short wedge haircuts without the massive disconnection that this haircut has as well. I’d say in general this style could be a wash and go, but would usually look best with at least minimal styling, if not a full blow dry. That all really depends on the client’s hair texture.
The upside to shorter hair is that it usually will fall into place and take a shorter amount of time to blow dry. I think for this particular haircut, finer to average hair with a little texture is ideal, but that shouldn’t discourage anyone from going for it! I’m also a huge fan of using texture products once the hair is dry for styles like this. For her, I love dry lift paste by AG Hair!
It doesn’t make the hair shiny and can also act as an oil repellent because it’s partially a dry shampoo in a paste form. If you needed the open up the haircut a little bit more, I’m in love with the texture spray made by Oligo.
Amazing Back View
This look is a versatile classic bob shape with a modern flair of rich color and texture. I love the depth created in the base formula, rich chocolate mocha created with Matrix ColorSync and how it just melts into the raspberry ends!
Things to take into consideration first and foremost is maintenance! Fashion shades have a tendency to fade faster, rinsing with cool water and using professional shampoo and conditioner, such as Biolage Color Care is a must! Shampooing no more than 3x a week extends longevity, utilizing a dry shampoo in between. I would not recommend this cut for someone with incredibly thick or coarse hair as it may have a tendency to create a triangulated shape around the face. Fave finishing product: Matrix Height Riser! Height Riser gives the perfect amount of texture and body.
Stylish Chin Length Cut
This hairstyle is a pixie cut with lots of layer and texture. The best thing about this hairstyle is how versatile it is. It can easily be changed from fun and edgy (like in the picture) to a more sleek and sophisticated look by simply combing it back behind the ears.
It does require maintenance. I would suggest a trim at least every 6-8 weeks to keep it looking great. This hairstyle is compatible with almost every face shape and works well with someone who has a medium to coarse hair density.
Also, depending on the hair texture, it may require more styling and product. Someone with straight to wavy hair may consider this haircut easy to style, only needing to blow dry it with your fingers, apply some texture spray or paste on the ends, and out the door! With a curlier texture, more time may be needed to style the hair. Curlier hair would need to be smoothed out with a blow dryer and round brush or flat ironed, before applying any type of texturizing styling products.
