28 Sexiest Wispy Bangs You Need to Try This Year

Best wispy bangs

Wispy bangs are soft bangs that are lightly feathered towards the end. Wispy bangs will flatter women with longer face shapes who want to shorten their appearance. They are a great choice if you have fine hair and don’t want to commit to a thick, full fringe.

If you’re looking to make a big change to your look, hairstyles with wispy bangs are always a great way to freshen things up. What’s great about these lighter bangs is that they look good on just about anyone. All types of bangs are a commitment, so be bold and go for it if you’re truly looking for something new!

Q&A with style creator, Melanie Warner
Hairstylist / Colorist @ Salon Herdis in Northampton, MA

How would you describe this look?

The wispy fringe is my favorite part of this hairstyle because it gives a new spin on a classic look! I also love how nicely her balayage grows out and how low maintenance it is. We haven’t lightened her hair in over 5 months. We just use a Redken Shades Eq Demi-Permanent hair gloss in-between balayage services to get rid of any excess warm tones and keep her a neutral sandy blonde.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would recommend blow drying at least the fringe with a round brush every day to ensure it lays nicely throughout the day. I would also recommend always using a heat protectant while styling to prevent against heat damage. A few of my favorites are Redken Pillow Proof Primer Spray and Pureology Smooth Perfection Lightweight Smoothing Lotion!

How would you describe this look?

This soft, long-layered haircut with wispy side bangs creates movement and extra volume. I love the face-framing detail. Soft waves accentuate the layers nicely.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For this look, the side-bangs require styling, either by round-brushing or straightening. Long layers like these work well for most hair types. I recommend this haircut/style for clients who desire more volume around their face.

Nice and Soft Bangs

Opt for a modern take on a classic bob! What I love about this cut is its wispy bang! It brings attention to the eyes. It’s such a versatile style, and its soft layers go great in a classic smooth-styled bob. It can also transform into something sassy with some textured waves.

Think about your morning routine, figuring out how much time you can dedicate to your hair and how much more time a style like this would take you to do.

Adorable Mid-Length with Wispy Fringe

mid-length cut with wispy bangs
Instagram @yukistylist

This look is great if you’re looking for a modern version of a shag haircut. The layers aren’t quite as short but the shape is there and you can’t ever go wrong with a wispy fringe.

If you have the time to style, add waves or curls or a natural texture if your hair is wavy or curly. The wispy bangs are a great option for women with smaller facial features instead of a full fringe because it doesn’t give such a harsh block and makes the face look smaller.

Bold Yet Soft

bold yet soft wispy bangs
Instagram @brianaguilarhair

Opt for a hairstyle that’s bold yet soft. The wispy fringe softens the harsh look of the bronde hair color but also makes a statement of its own.

Women with a small forehead or smaller head, in general, could potentially feel too closed in with such a full fringe. Ask for your fringe if you have a decent forehead for the hair to lay over.

Both this color and cut are high maintenance. The color will need to be touched up every three to five weeks to prevent banding and the fringe will need trimming to keep from getting into the eyes. This fringe is worn long to begin with, so only within a few weeks they will start to be too “in the eyes”.

This wispy bangs hairstyle is not recommended for anyone who can’t have their hair down or who is very active considering hair in the face could be annoying to some. Overall, this is a high-maintenance color and cut, but it’s very trendy and fashionable!

Barely There Bangs

barely there bangs
Instagram @yukistylist

I would definitely describe this look as a wispy bang. The rest of the hair will look great in messy waves, or even straight.

My favorite thing about these bangs is that they are so light and easy to work with, especially if you are someone like my client who has never had bangs before. This look allows you to see how you like having bangs. If you don’t end up liking bangs, these wispy bangs are super easy to grow out or simply push to the side. With heavier bangs, the grow-out process can be very annoying!

My advice for clients who ask for bangs is to start wispy. We can always add more bang to give it a heavier look. I also like to leave a few longer pieces on the sides by the temples so on a lazy day, you can just throw your hair up in a cute pony and style your bangs with some cute wispy pieces hanging out.

I don’t usually like any product in the bang area because it tends to weight them down and they get oily faster. I find clean bangs to work best. Make sure the hair is wet when you begin styling to help you achieve a smoother blow dry and a lot less separation. This is especially important if the client has cowlicks or a widow’s peak.

Use a smaller brush for more volume because the bangs will drop, and we don’t want our bangs too flat!

Cutting Edge Lob

Q&A with style creator, Emily Tripepi
Stylist @ EmilyFerratoHair in Essendon, VIC

How would you describe this look?

This look is contemporary, sleek, stylish, and cutting edge.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s not your typical lob hairstyle with summer waves! It’s something different for a change. It’s a hairstyle that once achieved on the right candidate, will frame and highlight the most beautiful features. Straight hair and bangs are back!

Any advice for someone considering it?

At EmilyFerratoHair in Essendon, we always start with a thorough consultation. If you are a low maintenance person that wants a wash and wear look, this haircut is not for you. This kind of cut and style needs a little bit of TLC every day to achieve the ultimate potential of its design.

If your hair is on the thinner side, it will be more difficult to achieve this look and we would advise an alternative look.

EVO Mane Tamer shampoo and conditioner and Easy Tiger leave-in conditioner are the perfect products to achieve these shiny, glossy results. We also recommend the GHD New Gold Straightener! As soon as you wash your hair, blast your fringe forward with a round brush and a hairdryer, especially if you are in the training stage for your new bangs. The tools you use are very important!

Short Bob with Light Bangs

short bob with light wispy bangs
Instagram @yukistylist

A short bob with light bangs is cut with a soft blunt edge, but also has some over-directed texture through the front to lighten all around the bangs.

Opt for wispy bangs for short hair. They look good on so many women and just need a quick blow dry!

Thicker hair can be controlled a bit more in a short bob like this. It has a lot of very clean lines!

To style, use Kevin Murphy Hair.Resort spray to give some extra texture to the ends. A quick blow dry and some sort of texture is really all this cut needs!

Soft Fringe with Long Layers

Q&A with style creator, Olga Rodriguez
Stylist @ De Berardinis Salon and Spa in Toronto, ON

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a soft fringe with long layers. My favorite part of this look is the fringe. It’s cut to frame her face and long enough so she can get some styling versatility. She can sweep the bangs to either side and in a few weeks, grow them into a nice a-line fringe.

The fringe is textured to be light and wispy to give it a more modern look. Adding the fringe to a long layered look was a quick change to a normal routine cut. My client wanted to change up her look but didn’t want to chop her hair off. By adding the fringe to her soft long layers, it changed her look up instantly.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice for clients wanting this look is to be aware of how much of a commitment a fringe can be. A fringe is very much a centerpiece of your hair. If there is a kink in them or they are not laying right, they can easily set you out for a bad hair day. Whenever I do give a client a fringe, I try to make them aware that styling them is a must. Very few of us have hair that cooperates effortlessly at all times in all conditions, so I usually give a quick blow dry lesson on how to style their fringe.

Because they require the most effort, I also recommend styling products to make their routine easier. I will recommend a heat protectant if flat ironing is required, or a volumizer for that extra lift and bounce in a fringe. I don’t normally recommend a fringe on someone with a smaller forehead or low hairline because they tend to have the most cowlicks or whirls which can be a big pain to try and work with on an everyday basis. Extremely curly hair is also a red flag for me when it comes to a fringe. If the client is knowledgeable in blow drying and flat ironing, then I have no problem giving them a fringe to their liking.

As far as face-framing, a fringe draws the most attention to eyes and eyebrows, so I try to make clients aware of that as well and make sure they are comfortable with length and thickness. My biggest piece of advice for clients thinking of getting a fringe is please don’t cut them yourself! I’ve heard and seen so many horror stories of self-cut bangs and sometimes fixing them is not as easy as you think. Leave it up to the professionals who can pick up the hair and angle their fingers properly to cut them. The best thing about a fringe is that it’s hair so it does grow back. A fringe is definitely a fun part of haircutting and evolving with each new trend.

Pixie Bob with a Wispy Bang

Q&A with style creator, Joan Dayton
Hair Stylist / Artist @ Theory Hair Salon in Bozeman, MT

How would you describe this look?

I would call this look a pixie bob with a wispy bang. It is undercut in the back like a pixie to accentuate her head shape and show off her beautiful neck.

My favorite things about this look are the fringe to softly frame her face and the shape of the cut. This cut allows her to wear her natural curl and gives the option of air drying for a very stylish look that is easy every day.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For those clients with naturally curly hair, this is a feminine style that works well with a curl mousse or cream. For those wanting a similar shape but may blow dry and wear the hair smooth, I suggest using a light leave-in conditioner with a heat protectant, as well as a texture spray once the hair is dry.

This look works well for those seeking a sassy and sophisticated look without a lot of styling time.

Sultry Shag

Q&A with style creator, Ally Posey
Stylist and Balayage Specialist @ Frizzles Salon in Springfield, VA

How would you describe this look?

The best way I can describe this wispy bang look is sultry, but young and flirty. I know we all had those blunt big bangs as a child that we may be scarred from, so these are the new alternative. They draw enough attention to your eyes without overpowering them with too much hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For clients considering this look, be ready to style! The bangs can be low maintenance, but I think this look works best for those who are ready to work with them. When styling, I usually suggest sweeping the bangs section back and forth with a round or flat brush to defeat any hard part, then styling them under as usual.

Talking to your stylist is key because sectioning matters a LOT for these. I always start with a smaller section because more hair can be added if they aren’t thick enough. The wispy bangs can be catered to almost any hair type by adjusting the length, thickness, and the specific shape of the section. I think straight/minimally wavy hair types are best for them, however.

I love finishing the styling of wispy bangs with a dry texture spray or a little bit of a aerosol hairspray to hold them in place and give them a textured, lived-in look.

Light and Textured Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Trish Marshall
Hair Artist @ Tribe Salon Spa in Roseville, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look features a soft wispy bang that is trendy and fun! I love that these bangs are light and textured which makes styling easier. You have the option to push them away because they are so light, and that makes them versatile for more active lifestyles.

I also love the attention they bring to her eyes and face. This is a momma of twin boys and these sassy bangs just give her a quick style in itself!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This wispy bang is a great style for fine to medium textured hair that is not too coarse or curly for easier maintenance. Styling may include drying with a small to medium-sized round brush and light spray for hold. I like to lightly spray underneath bangs and then shape them into place.

To maintain this look, regular trims about every three to four weeks are recommended. I would avoid this style if strong cowlicks or a widow’s peak are present. If you’re considering this look and are up for a little bit of maintenance, this is a fun style to try!

Wispy & Texturized

Q&A with style creator, Megan Meads
Hairstylist @ Allure Hair Studio in Medicine Hat, AB

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look/haircut as a textured medium haircut with lots of movement and face-framing layers to help the bangs blend in. The bangs are blunt, but wispy and texturized to give volume to my client’s fine hair.

My favorite thing about the cut is how much volume my client can achieve with the layering and texturizing around her face. I also love that the bangs are cut so she can wear them as a full fringe, or sweep them to the side for lower maintenance days.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Bangs can completely change a look, as well as amplify a regular style into a glamorous hairdo! They are becoming very trendy for the seasons ahead.

Some advice I would give to anyone looking to change up their haircut with bangs would be to understand that you have to actually style your hair! If you are someone who likes a “wash and wear” look, then bangs probably aren’t for you.

Understand that bang trims will be a thing in your future. Bangs are the first thing you see and notice as they grow out, so keeping up with regular trims is a must to keep them looking fresh.

Not all styles of bangs suit everyone. Angled bangs, wispy bangs, razored bangs, blunt bangs, curtain bangs, etc. will not all look great on the same person. Work with your hair type and take your lifestyle into account to find out what works best for your face shape, your routine, and what is easiest for you to style!

Anyone looking to achieve a messy or tousled look like this needs to use a product. A spray wax or pomade are great for piecing out bangs, layers and texture with any hair type! Some of my favorites are the Unite Texturiza Spray and Bed Head’s Manipulator.

Versatile Wispy Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Mimi
Hairstylist / Owner @ Mimi Hair in Brentwood / Santa Monica, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

Wispy bangs are a versatile way to change your look because they are long enough to wear as side bangs or full bangs.

My favorite thing about this look is that it is a zero commitment style that grows out very nicely if you don’t want to wear bangs anymore.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

You can blow dry the hair for volume and use a flat iron to give it a textured look. No product needed!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is ideal for straight hair or anyone looking for a subtle change. It works for any face shape!

Anyone can recreate this cool cut with a lengthy fringe that complements all face types other than a round one. It’s a very great look when you’re the type who doesn’t wanna put much effort into styling your hair everyday yet still look mesmerizing!

Q&A with style creator, Louise Mishler
Level 2 Stylist / Salon Manager @ Roots Salon & Spa in Wauwatosa, WI

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a textured take on the classic full fringe. I love the versatility of a soft frame, and because it’s light and wispy, the commitment level is low!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I love to enhance the texture brought out by the razor by using Paul Mitchell’s Invisiblewear Volume Whip in the blowout, then locking it in with their Undone Texture Hairspray. For people who like to feel a little more lived-in, a few puffs of Redken’s Powder Grip gives amazing lift and definition!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This face hugging fringe can be adjusted to work well on most face shapes by broadening or narrowing the center/horizontal line of the fringe. A fine or medium hair type suits this style best, and the denser your hair, the fuller these bangs would start to feel.

If you’re thinking of trying bangs but you’re nervous about the commitment, this is an awesome stepping stone into the wonderful world of fringe!

Auburn Brown Short Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Sairy Contreras
Hairstylist / Makeup Artist @ Paris Hair Salon in Fallbrook, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

To describe this look I would say it’s risking beauty! My client was scared of getting short wispy bangs, but she was willing to risk it to approach something she’s always wanted.

My favorite thing about this look is that not only were they wispy, but they went perfect with her face complexion and she totally loved them. They made her whole appearance more welcoming and full of confidence. Change is good!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using a little bit of root lift right at the base of the bangs and blow drying them with a small round brush to the desired look. I like to give them a little shake with my fingers for that messy yet on purpose look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to women that just want a change. Bangs aren’t that scary if you get the correct bangs. Many women with wider foreheads like bangs to cover their forehead a bit. I also always recommend them to girls with long oval faces.

Wispy Full Fringe

Q&A with style creator, Michelle Green
Stylist / Redken Elite @ Hair Loft in Salina, KS

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I added this long and wispy full fringe into my client’s long bob to spice up her everyday look! I love it because when cut correctly, I feel it adds a lot of character and drama into a haircut.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend Redken’s Rough Paste 12 to piece out curls for that undone look, and finishing with Redken Windblown05 for a textured, airy appearance without feeling gunky.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Wispy bangs are great for a lot of different hair types! Fine/medium textures tend to be more low maintenance than someone with coarse hair, but it all boils down to how long the hair needs to be for the natural bend of the hair to come into play and how thick of a section you’re taking out for your fringe.

My client, in particular, has a round face shape, so it was important to angle down the edges of her fringe to balance out her face shape and not overwhelm by adding any more width to her appearance. Tweaking small details makes a full fringe possible for a range of different face shapes!
